Unless you are a Quebecois, Split Pea Soup is likely not very exciting.
I make soups frequently because my old dog is fed baked chicken parts twice daily and there is an accumulation of chicken bones in the freezer.
While those bones, onions, garlic, carrots and celery simmer away in a stock pot, the house is filled with a wonderful aroma which is a nice departure from the cat's sandbox.
Once strained and cooled the fat is separated. Bacon is fried up crisp and the split peas are rinsed. I prefer to cook in the peas and bacon in a slow cooker. Then, in goes the hand blender and seasonings. Usually Herbs de Provence but I have a blend of "Moroccan Spices" that I am anxious to try.
Nothing says early Fall to me like Split Pea Soup.

Whenever I travelled through Buellton in central California, I always had to stop at Andersens pea soup...deelicious, probably not as good as your homemade though...nothing beats homemade. www.peasoupandersens.net/

I love all soups. I have with my wife's help perfected a Corn,Ham and Shrimp soup. Nothing like a hot bowl of soup on a chilly day with fresh baked French bread. Wife is gonna make me an Onion Soup tonight with fresh baked French bread and Gruyere cheese.

I happen to love the stuff. About the only thing I like about cold weather is hot soup.

Hard to beat "Hap-Pea" and "Pea-Wee" at Buellton. Naturally, Andersen's is not available in these parts.

Pea soup is food of the gods. So easy to make and so rewarding for the effort. Peas, broth, onions, spices, ham bone, etc. I sometimes blend the result in a food process, sometimes I leave it unblended. Always a pleasure to enjoy.

I grew up on Anderson's and like it to this day. But the best way to enjoy it is at an Anderson's Restaurant with all of the fixings.

Agree. But you are a heck of a lot closer to it than I am. The best I can do is dream and make the soup at home. If I close may eyes and wish hard enough I can smell the fresh baked goodies in Solvang and hear the waves crashing at Jalama Beach.

Gotta say, of all the soups Split Pea is the KING, I love peas and especially split pea soup and ya gotta have bits of ham in it. Damn, I haven't even finished my coffee and I'm hungry already and not a split pea in the house.

Ok if you can eat it with a fork is it still soup? Chili is not soup! Stew is not soup! Sauerkraut is not soup! Lets get this show on the road. Thoughts and opinions are welcome. These discussions are important what is the difference between a soup and pease porridge is a pudding right, or is it.

Split pea soup is on of my favorite staples. Made nice and thick for supper....then let it sit and congeal and cut slices to put on buttered bread for breakfast!

Well a fellow can try my good friend. So much for spontaneous combustion of rabid jocularity loaded with complete and utter nonsense. I suppose I can get back to splitting pea's by hand for the soup.
