Flake, ribbon, shag... what straight Virginia blends do you enjoy? Three of mine are FVF, Capstan Blue, and Dunhill Flake.

Straight ginny: FVF by a huge margin. Topped bright ginny: OGS (Can't taste the alleged pinch of Perique in there) Stoved/dark/other ginnys: Dark Star, Union Square, Butera Matured Ribbon and a few others...the jury's still out.

I love Dunhill's flake, and will be getting some Capstan Blue, wholly for the Tolkien connection

I'm gonna cheat because it's rare that I really love a straight VA. The few times I have:
30+ year-old sample of Elephant & Castle Deerstalker 20-something year-old sample of Dunhill Light Flake 7-year old FVF
Honorable mention: the 2nd half of a bowl McClelland Dark Navy Flake (the first half was hideous).
Apparently I like 'em better well aged... but would rather dump some rum or brandy-blackberry-vanilla goop on them, or mix with latakia.

Since a couple of people have brought up Orlik Golden Sliced, does it really have Perique or not?. I think it must be negligible if it is there. I have read posts in various forums discussing this and recall someone saying that a manufacturing source confirmed it's use in the blend. I do not get a Perique mouthfeel or any of the spice or aroma I normally am aware of with my other VaPer blends. I do love OGS though and always have several tins aging. How many of you taste Perique in OGS? Hope I am not diverting or hijacking your thread Jimbo.

In no particular order:
Dunhill Flake Sam Gawith Best Brown Flake McCranie's Red Ribbon McClelland Stave-aged Virginia 35 Ribbon McClelland #27 McClelland Christmas Cheer McClelland #5100
The one which perhaps flies under the radar a little is C&D Opening Night, vastly underrated IMHO.

I find OGS remarkably comparable to Dunhill Flake except I get just enough peppery taste from OGS to tell any difference. I smoke both interchangeably in a couple of GBD bulldogs.

I find OGS really harsh - like I've been crawling through a burning building. I'm not sure if it's a body chemistry thing, but I do get it with some Perique blends. Or it could just be what others call "pepper".

Some Burley blends that people smoke as an all day smoke irritate my palate.

Forum member username claims that they hover a pallet of Perique over the tobacco when it passes through the production room.

Forgot to type in Mac Baren Va #1, somewhat special this one as it really taught me more about smoking in general as well as being an enjoyable straight Va. It's an all day smoke for me now which I couldn't have stated on my first tin. Age serves it incredibly well.

FVF is one of the only straight VA's I smoke. I like that it's got some pretty good body but also the natural sweetness. It's really one of the only VA's I have ever smoked that I like.

okay, so i researched it and Dunhill Three Year Matured is not a straight VA so I have to change my answer to McClelland's Fragrant Red.
