I finally had my dental implant done yesterday. I was supposed to have it done in July, but the bone in my jaw had not healed sufficiently. I had a root canal done on one of my back molars a few years ago. The root canal failed and an infection started that ate into my jaw bone a bit. I did not know it was happening until I started getting a very faint twinge when I chewed on that side. I also was getting a lot of migraine headaches. X-rays found the problem. That tooth was extracted in March. So glad I realized something might be going south with that tooth. Now the implant site has to heal until January. Then I finally get a crown. No smoking advised for at least four weeks. Sigh. I will not risk any aggravation of the healing and cause a setback or failure though. Too much time, pain and money involved. One other thing; a dremel bit drilling a hole in your jawbone still hurts even under sedation!

Yes, Get well, Don. Will it help heal if I send a pic of me in my Lady Margaret inspired Lavender Underwear? I do note your interest previously. David

I've read where it is imperative you do not smoke after an operation like yours, please stifle the urge and then you will be 100% aggravate your wife , be mean to your Dog, fuss at the kids on your lawn, all good practice for Codgerville.

Thanks gents. David and Pete, you guys almost made me spit coffee out of my nose! David, I threaten the guys at work with what I will wear on my retirement day. Riding boots, athletic supporter and sombrero. I believe you have trumped that threat with your image. I may have to try to destroy that part of my brain with a sharp icepick now. Thanks. 💩🤡
I abstained for six weeks after they pulled this tooth. My daughter had dry sockets in three of her four wisdom teeth she had pulled last Winter. Poor girl, she was miserable. I was afraid of having that in just one socket. I was very careful and did all the rinses, etc. Brad, your advice is good as usual, and I will resist all pipe smoking urges again this time around. I am already making up for it with excessive posting and money spending. Hah!

Had my choppers done up top and back after the third root canal failed. It really helped to have a hot female dentist but it was more expensive than a three day binge at a topless club.

This. Time to order a bunch of snuffs and focus on that to forget about smoking for a while. Hope you're good to go again soon. Snuff is fairly cheap. You can get a bunch if different smaller tins for $30-40 or so.

Nicotine is a vasoconstrictor, anytime you have had surgery, good blood flow to the parts is essential, it is better to take a break until after the healing... and for a scheduled/ elective operation ceasing to use tobacco leading up to the operation.

Yep. I stopped about four days out and will wait the four weeks recommended after, maybe a bit more. I won't be the cause of the implant failing. This tooth has been a long and trying process. Starting about three years back. The original root canal was an emergency one. I had a bad cavity and had scheduled the root canal, but did not make it to that procedure. The nerve became exposed one evening. Knee buckling pain, that was. put me on the floor in the fetal position. Wife's pain meds took the edge off. Dentist came in after hours to do the root canal. It failed early this year and the tooth could not be saved, and I had bone loss under it. By the time I am do e and have a crown on it in January, this tooth will have required approximately 12-13 visits to the dentist, oral surgeon and maxio-facial surgeon. Not kidding.

My surgeon that has impeccable credentials admitted that he enjoys cigars and cautioned me about nicotine while undergoing the healing process. www.azisks.comI heeded his advice and had remarkable results post op. I understand your good natured banter and accept it as such, but reply only so that a casual observer might consider this in the event they face a future rehabilitation post op. Obviously, I am not a medical professional, but I suspect that the same holds true for any sort of surgery where maximum blood flow is important to aid the recovery process.

I was torn between being serious or being me. In seriousness, I was on morphine for five years after my neck surgeries. I had a great MD who trusted me and gave me what I needed. He was not the surgeon who messed me up. He gave me what I needed, but at one point I asked him when it ends. He said I could keep taking more till I died. I asked him because I was feeling dumbed down slowly but surely. I gave it up. Even though my new MD (makes house calls) would give me what I need I take OTC for pain, and I live with the rest. That's why Johnny Cash's Hurt song hits me so. I would rather feel alive than dumbed down. Much of my antics come from pain deflection. And, even though I had no open wounds for smoke to get in, I was warned off of smoking. Well, I didn't at the time. But when I mentioned being on the wagon recently it was because I had a cut on my tongue (one of the times). I would not smoke till healed. I certainly hope the best and Godspeed for Don. So much is happening right now with weather and our friends here that hanging together (not literally) is a good thing, I think, for us.
