Part of learning what the various components in blends bring to the table is smoking them seperately. What varietals have you tried?
I've smoke both Syrian and Cyprian Latakia blending tobaccos, a variety of Virginia blending tobaccos, and a variety of Periques. I've gotten in some Basma, and Izmir and will be giving them a test run.

I have smoked some of them - bright Virginia, red Virginia, Kentucky Burley, red tips Burley, Perique, Maryland, and Izmir. I started blending tobaccos in January and it has helped in planning new blends.

Tried straight Lat when I was young. It was coo and didn't burn, but it was too much for me at the time. Very heavy, if I recall.

Sweet reds Bright Virginias Burleys C&D Long Cut Perique D&R Acadian Bright Perique (from a VA instead of burley Perique) Latakia (I believe only straight Cyprian) I don't believe I've smoked Oriental varieties straight yet, but have smoked many Oriental forward, mostly Yenidje, Drama, Smyrna type blends with just a smudge of VA in them.
I'm growing Rustica Sacred Wyandot indoors currently that will be ready to cut in about 3 weeks. It's very mild in flavor but extremely high in nicotine content.

Perique only, unless you count Semois.
