I have taken an interest in making ropes out of whole leaf tobacco and I bought some DR Acadian VA whole leaf to use. Several people who's opinions I respect recommended I try the leaf before using it in my ropes. One of the gents even went as far as sending a tub of the leaf in shredded form! Well I was not keen on smoking this straight VA tobacco due to my many bad experiences with all of the straight VA blend pipe tobaccos I have tried and I planned on using the tub of this in my ropes by placing it rope just before twisting.
I opened the tub with great caution with my face turned away and eyes closed fully expecting the usual VA tobacco smell of ketchup to send me reeling backwards. I cut the plastic seal that was under the lid and tore it away waiting to be overwhelmed from the VA tobacco blend fumes. Waiting.Waiting.WAIT! Hold on a minute here, the usual stench of VA blends I expected was absent and in it's place was an aroma I found pleasing...a smell of something fermented is the best way to describe it. Not the fermented smell coming from the half full travel mug you found under the passenger seat but the sweet fermented smell of ( If you live on a farm, worked on one as a kid or live in the country you will totally get this!) silage.
Still skeptical I loaded a wide pipe, tossed on a sweater and thinking this was going to over pretty quick I went outside barefoot to see how long it took for my face to start melting from the all Virginia blend. After ten minutes I realized the sweet, smooth and mild taste was here to stay so I went and sat on the porch swing to finish the bowl. The taste was sweet and hay like.. a bit earthy as well.
After 20 minutes my wife came outside and sat next to me and we watched the night sky for another 15 minutes. My feet started to freeze and the wife would not take my slippers off of her feet nor did I want to give up my sweater we sat out for maybe five more minutes before we realized how cold it was and how cold we both were and headed back inside.
I rate this blend 4 stars because it kept me out in the cold for over 40 minutes and even though my feet felt like solid blocks of ice I still wanted to finish the bowl.
