When you open one of these tubs, how long do you think it can hold tobacco for in a decent smoking condition? I have a tub of Chestnut I am getting ready to open. Gracias friends.

On another forum, the blender Russ Oulette commented that the screw top lid does a pretty good job of sealing it, Jiminks added:

Aaron I smoke from the tub. I find when I first open it the tobacco is very moist I pull out what I want then dry it. If you are going to smoke it now and then what Jiminks said is good advise. When I have one of these tubs it is my main smoke. Chestnut is good, Sweet Cask is good, Chatham Manor is good. Aros bad yuck.

I've had a tub of Sweet Cask open for about a year with no problems. I did like suggested and left the film on the rim.

Sealed plastic is good for longer than people in Tobyland give it credit for. I got tired of clinking glass jars and got some PET BPA free plastic jars. With my tubs I put a hydrostone in.
BTW, Sutliff Sugar Barrel match gave some sweetness I did not get out of H&H Sweet Cask. I would have figured they were the same.

One thing you can also do if the film tears off is just put some wax paper been jar and lid.
I am getting ready (not today) to open some eighty year old tobacco, so I am not worried so much about the effects of a year or so on new stuff

These plastic tub aromatic OTCs keep forever dudes. I'm positive as long as you keep the lid on that Chatham Manor it'll smoke just fine 20 years from now and still have pliability. Or Chestnut. Same thing. They're aromatics with Propylene Glycol in them in small amounts. Moisture stays right for aeons.

I had small sample a while back and enjoyed it. Bing Crosby used to smoke it.

I had small sample a while back and enjoyed it. Bing Crosby used to smoke it. It was pretty full throated, a mouthful. I think it would please many non-aro smokers enough that they might quit looking for the ultimate. I got the bit of nuttiness in it. What you have described as cocoa I also "got" but I could not ID it as cocoa. Maybe due to age. More possibly due to my health on the day I tried it. If there was any flavoring it did nothing to sublimate the tobacco. Oh, and no bite. For that I would give it 3 of four stars. That is subjective as a non-aro might give it 3.5 or 4 I am looking forward to cracking that barrel of Briggs eventually, as it has a nice floral scent to.

I have kept and used my Sta-Fresh tubs (CH, PA, etc.). I have a dozen going now for regular smokes and have kept blends in them for 10 years. Occasionally, I'll get some dryness and when that happens, I mix in a fresh ounce and there good to go. I also transfer blends from lined cardboard tubs (SWR, Lane, Granger etc.) to the STA-Fresh tubs for added freshness security. With my EGR and Heine's Blends, I also keep the plastic seal in place as mentioned above.

I have been on the fence about trying these. I have a tub of Chatham Manor that someone sent me... and it doesn't really ring my bell, though neither does Carter Hall.
The Chestnut and Derby Club Aro are both tempting though.

The Chestnut and Derby Club Aro are both tempting though. You can get a 1 ounce bag of the Sutliff Walnut Match on P&C which is the identical blend they put in the "Chestnut" tubs. Sutliff makes the blends. Pretty sure the same goes for the Derby Club. Don't buy the tub unless you know you like it.

I love both Chatham Manor and Prince Andrew. Great taste and great price. Perfect for bulking out my cellar. I've heard from people who have smoked out of an open tub for a year just fine. Personally, when I open a tub, I break it down into eight 8oz mason jars. 14oz in tub means 1.75oz (50gm) in each jar.
