Friends, fellow pipers and people with pipe trivia minds. For years I have held on to a pipe, trying to figure some things out. I know it is a "Shell Drake," because it is stamped on it. I have no idea, however, who made it...when it was made, etc....the only knowledge I have found is what it is not. One lousy listing that says a Shell Drake is not a CustomBilt Prehistoric. (And who knows...they could be wrong) The only feature that might help identify is a metal band that allows the bit to be aligned. I can only offer a poor quality picture of it. I seek thoughts, ideas and any and all guesses.

Thanks for the info. Close...very close, but the gouges rustication is far different and the adjustomatic band...*sigh* I am pretty sure it was sold OTC in drug stores and such.

Although I can't conclusively say who made that pipe, I did try to do some digging and found out there's a ghost town waaaaay up in Northern Michigan called Shelldrake. Which I found to be pretty interesting. Shelldrake,MI
On a serious note, we'll need some good closeup pictures of the stem taken down, the adjustomatic if it has one, stinger, etc. both sides, the stamping, close up of the rustication, etc. That picture just looks like a Dr. Grabow, if anything.

I thank you. In truth I find the ghost town fascinating. When once I could walk, I used to "collect" ghost towns so to speak. The last I visited was Elk Horn, Montana. I will attempt to get some functional photos. Will take awhile as I am mostly blind and paralyzed from a stroke. (not to mention the @%%%& adjustomatic just unscrewed on the wrong side)

To me it looks like it's most likely a Dr. Grabow 2nd, they were known for there Adjustomatic stems. Or seeing that the adjustomatic stem doesn't work properly as you stated "unscrewing on the wrong side" (?)this stem may not even belong originally to this pipe. Without having it one's hand for inspection it's next to impossible to evaluate anything about this pipe.........of course unless someone finds an Identical pipe with more markings on it.

I'd say Grabow something as well like in my first post. I can't barely make out the rustication but it's similar too.

If Adjustomatic and a Patent Pending number are inscribed on the right side of the shank, it would likely be a Grabow pipe. If not, who knows? DRG was not the only manufacturer to use that mount.
