Found this picture from Texas in the the 1800s. I think it's magnificent. Two dudes on the ends showed John Wayne how to stand, I think.

Judge Roy Bean. What a character. Was so nuts about actress Lilly Langtree he named a town after her. Might let a murderer go and hang you for a nickel

Langtry was a engineer who worked for the railroad. There is not much out that way in Val Verde county Tx. The main reason was the town was probably there is a system of caves that goes under the Rio Grande to the Mexico side and a watering stop for locomotives. I get out that way every now and then as my great grandfather grew up in Juno. The Army had a base in Juno to protect early settlers from Indian attacks. This was in 1849 on Beaver Lake long since washed away. Of interest stage lines still ran in that part of the country even after 1900. This is cattle and sheep country and big ranches are still out that way and not much else. www.vvchc.net/marker/Langtry%20narrative.html

Thanks for clarifying it. His saloon was called the Jersey Lilly. Nice coincidence, though

Nobody is really sure if was even a Justice of the Peace, much less a Judge. We do know he was a coroner for the railroad. I think the real legend was made by Hollywood. I do believe the part about the bear as they ran pretty freely in that area. There was a town known as Vinegarroon at the Pecos rail road crossing where Bean was a JOP the year was 1883.You can still walk the original train tunnels dug with Chinese labor. A second bridge was built in 1890 the highest in the US at the time. A third bridge was built in 1944. What some call Langtry is actually the town of Dodd. History and myths have a way of becoming one if given enough time. Heck Lilly Langtry was a made up name her real name was Emilie Charlotte Le Breton. Truth be told Langtry was a squatters camp sitting on railroad land. The tracks are gone now, moved to the north.

Yow. You guys all know way more about this part of history than me. I just liked the pic. They seem to have an abundance of equipment.

There are still places like that here in AZ. Awhile ago, we were in Skull Valley at an old Wells Fargo Stagecoach stop. There is a steakhouse there now with the meat walking around out back. Two characters that looked just like that rode up and tied off their horses. Each one took off his dusty hat and used it to dust off their chaps before walking into the bar. A classic moment for sure! ☺

Awesome. I used to date a girl who owned a stable, and to make some extra bucks, would stable other peoples' horses as well as her own. This meant at least once a week, we'd go down and ride them. My horse was fantastic. The first time I rode her, she could tell I was a newbie, and we're clip clopping down the road, and she suddenly looks right, then just freaking jumped over the barbed wire fence and took off. We're running through people's back yards and fields, and she's jumping all the fences. After a hundred yards or so, when I realized pulling on the reins and yelling woah wasn't going to do shite, I was just along for the ride and had to hang on. If I fell off, it was probably going to be on one of the jumps, and I'd probably get kicked in the nuts for my trouble. Plus, I didn't know where I was, and she was my ride home! She knew exactly where she was. Finally, finally, she jumps over the last fence and back on the road. My 'friends' were already there, which I didn't figure out meant something until later. I got off and punched her in the face. Not too hard, I didn't was her to kill me, but enough to say I'm angry. She had effectively just told me, 'I obey you because I choose to, not because I have to, blankety blanker' and she never misbehaved again. She taught me a lesson though. Great horse

I've encountered many places "off the map" here in Arizona that once existed and have ZERO history.

Great part of the state. If you are in the area be sure to stay at the Outback Oasis Motel and Snake Farm in Sandersont. The old guys there can tell great stories about the famous (or infamous) Texas Ranger and Border Patrol that worked in the area.

Cobguy if you want a good laugh stop in Santa Claus Az or Go see the Bottle painting in Chloride. I wore out two jeeps exploring Ghost towns out west. Most people don't know but out beloved government has shut down many of the old roads in places like Death Valley, Sierras, AZ, NV etc.

I've been to both of those places on my way to the turn-off at Dolan Springs. We've been out there a handful of times with our metal detectors and dry-washers in Gold Basin near White Elephant Wash. Glad to hear you got to romp around in jeeps out here ... few places compare, IMHO.
