After a weekend of searching and dwelling on my first online pipe tobacco purchase here's what I ordered. Am I heading in the right direction, or would I been just as well off smoking gym socks? Here it is: Dunhill Early Morning Smoke 1.75 Tin Sutliff Buttered Rum 2oz. European Vacation Sampler (3 pouch deal which included free shipping for the whole order) It was only a buck for all 3! John Bull Erin Go Bragh (Irish Whiskey) C'est LaVie French Vanilla I've also ordered a Missouri Meerschaum County Gentleman, and hemp wick. There you have it...your thoughts.

Your choices cover a lot of ground but should give you enough of an idea where your tastes may eventually concentrate. Good idea getting the cob. Cobs are great for trying new blends and deliver a lot of bang for the buck. Good luck, have fun and let us know your impressions of those blends.

Very good start, go slow, see what you like. Cob is good.

Always a good idea to try a diverse selection of blends in the beginning. Later as your palate refines you can delve into the types of tobaccos you enjoy most. Can't go wrong with a cob. Good luck on your journey. Try not to contract PAD or TAD. It's been known to happen, especially if you peruse forums like this one. Oh, one more thing, the former is impossible so get ready to keep digging into your wallet. You will have a blast!

I am assuming that you are starting out from scratch, so I am responding at the elementary level, Watson! Dunhill Early Morning and John Bull are both English blends that contain the smoky leaf called latakia. Erin, C'est, and buttered rum are all aromatics. You might want to try: Some Burley blends Virginia blends Virginia /Perique, referred to as Va-per Virginia/ Burley known as Va-bur And when you take it further, many of these blends come in loose, ready rubbed, flake, plug, crumble cake, etc...which really add to the mix. If you are near Louisville, I would call and ask if these guys have a pipe club, at one time I know they did...there is no substitute for meeting up with other pipe smokers, and typically many of us have several blends already opened to sample. www.kremerssmokeshoppe.com/about.html

Yes, like pa said, a good selection to see where your tastes are. A lot of folks' tastes change over time, from liking aromatics in the beginning, to Englishes, Balkans and Virginias later on. The cob is, as you know, an excellent choice. No need to drop $150 on an admittedly pretty Savinelli when that Country Gentleman will smoke just as well, and has it's own rustic charm. PS Pipe stores regularly list normal size tins as 1.75 oz. They are actually weighed to equal 50 grams, not ounces, and 50 grams is actually 1.76 oz. Personal pet peeve

Had some errands to run this morning and on my way I got curious to look into the local cigarette shop. I was surprised to see a display board of MM cob pipes. I realize that I have one on the way to me in the mail, but priced at 4.95 I had to have one. They had several varieties of pouch tobaccos, (SWR, Half/Half, PA, Carter Hall and so on) but the Red Cap caught my eye. 21.26g for 1.19 didn't seem unreasonable for a trial. It smells good in the pouch, but it is dry as a bone. After some online review searching, it appears that's the way it is packaged, very dry. It wasn't a problem to pack (like I'd know...still learning) and didn't seem to have a harsh taste. It says black wild cherry, but it's barely noticeable to me. With the purchase of the pipe, I'm wondering is that a symptom of early onset PAD? I tried to rationalize myself out of the purchase, but couldn't stop myself.

Yes. Saw a store, had to stop, and left with a new pipe and pouch, even though some were already on the way? Yeah, you're wholly and irreversibly screwed. Anyone want to start an office pool on how long before Greg stops by that store again for another $5 pipe and a pouch of Carter Hall?
Sorry mate, that's how it starts.

...Red Cap...always bone dry...but a reasonable smoke...I hydrate mine a bit before smoking and I'm smoking some that has 30 years of age on it...as suggested, get a few more cobs to try tobaccos...

I've already bought a pouch of Carter Hall, and it's good too!

HA! I would've won the pool. I don't know who you bought from online, but by far the two most famous sites are pipesandcigars and smokingpipes; P&C advertises much more, I suspect that's who you used. If I'm buying tobacco, I go with whoever's cheaper with the shipping. If I'm buying a pipe (not a cob, but a briar), I like smokingpipes better, because each photo is of the actual pipe they are selling; P&C uses stock photos. That is, if smokingpipes has four identical pipes, they will photograph and sell each one separately, so you can pick the one with the grain you like the best. Also, I really like SP's page when you click on New Pipes. For each manufacturer, they list the cheapest and most expensive pipe they have before you click the link. This allows you to say hmm, probably no need to click on these here Alexander Sokolik pipes, er maybe I'll see if I like any of these here Comoy's...

Other starter blends to try would be Prince Albert, Sir Walter Raleigh, Captain Black.

Just placed an order for a tin of Edward G Robinson and a tin of Hearth & Home Daybreak. That should hold me for awhile.
