What would it take to replace those face pictures at the top of the page with photos of pipes that people are posting in various threads? If there is interest in doing this could they rotate daily or something? Just a thought as I am getting ready to punch a few of those old time smokers. If nobody else thinks this would be cool then carry on and I will punch away.  |

Besides, even if it had been easy to replace the dudes with the pipes, with pictures of pipes, I'd offer this site isn't about pipes. It's about people.

That's why we have a section to post social, non-pipe stuff. If you see a title about my new dog, don't click it. We socialize like we were in the back room of the pipe shop; it's not always about pipes and tobacco, just a lot of it is. Justin lets our community go where it wants; he's just there to whack someone if they say Reagan was good, or Baptists are wrong The social stuff is just us acting like we were over at Dino's house, with friends who also love smoking pipes. |

Hasta This site IS about pipes and tobacco, but if every single thread consisted of mind-numbing details about the tobacco someone was smoking, or the new pipe they got without any personal interaction... I would close this forum down. At that point we might as well all have numbers instead of usernames and identical avatars. The idea of this site is to allow us to interact in a way that distance and in some cases non-smoking laws prevent. The continued existence of pipe smoking--whether you see it as a lifestyle or a hobby--depends on our ability to interact, communicate and share ideas and opinions. We will--in my humble opinion--only survive as a community. While I have always been very clear that this is not the place for religion or politics, I do want to know about peoples lives. I want people to be able to start conversations that don't always revolve around pipes and tobacco. Are those threads silly at times? Sure, but they are necessary in order for our members to share a bit more of their personality than their pipe and tobacco selections display. |

Justin said it right there. I can only read so many threads asking, what is your desert island blend, or what kind of tobacco should I buy? Notice how the no politics or religion pretty well keeps the vitriolic insults away. If you don't want to see pics of Steve's new Harley, or Fred's fishing trip to Montana, don't click the link. I can't read about pipes and tobacco all damn day, sometimes I want to see what else my online buddies are up to. If you're not that way, no problem; there's plenty of pipes and tobacco threads here |
