Just got a pound bag of Vintage Syrian in anticipation of its disappearance. It's a factory-sealed bag, and is airtight. Is there any reason I need to open this and jar it now, or should it be good to stay in the bag as long as it stays airtight?

Jar it.
The bag would probably do the trick, as them are pretty robust bags but Jars are definitely more robust.

My bag of Original Choice, dated last February, was on the dry side and I transferred it. Don't know the moisture content of your Vintage Syrian though.

I picked up a bag of vintage syrian from 2009 last month and it is dry, not powder but very close. I'd jar it as most of those mass bags are just a semiporous plastic, the pores are large enough for water and scent to escape and thats counter productive to long term storage.

The prepper in me went to work on this issue, though not for the faint of heart. I got some laminated aluminum foil pouches that are food grade. I really got tired of glass jars. Even got tired of PET plastic ones, though I will still buy them occasionally. I got a hundred bags for 22$. They come in various sizes. Mine hold at least 8 ounces of tobacco, making them a little better than a quart jar.
Also, remember the old SWR pouches, sort of tin foil? Middleton still uses them for a couple tobaccos. I bought some foil hamburger sleeves that will hold a couple ounces, fit for a day out. I like them better than ziplocks, though they are not as airtight.

I Mylar bag all my tobacco. 3 mil with zipper and then I heat seal.
More space and weight advantages vs. jars.

Thanks guys - I'm going to look into the mylar bags. How do you heat seal them?

Thanks guys - I'm going to look into the mylar bags. How do you heat seal them? I bought an impulse sealer on Ebay. They are cheap. You could also use an iron too. Something like this:http://www.ebay.com/itm/16-400mm-Manual-Impulse-Heat-Sealer-Poly-Bag-Machine-Shrink-Wrap-Free-Element-/292093007115?hash=item440219950b:g:D9UAAOSw3ZRY-dmx I think I have an 8 inch or 12 inch and it barely fits the width of a 1 gallon mylar bag so a little bigger would be better.

This is the bad boy I bought. Decent price (I think) and works like charm. Similar to what Randy has, only not as industrial. www.discountmylarbags.com/KF-150CST-Heat-Sealer/That is also where I get all my bags from. I have found their prices and customer service to be pretty damn good.

Possibly a dumb question, but do you guys "decant" into the mylar bag before sealing, or just put the already sealed MacB bag in there?

The only dumb question is the one not asked.
Two ways of thinking on this...It might make sense to break it up into smaller bags, so as to be able to add to your rotation as you work your way through it.
If you think that it will be a long stretch before you delve into it, and you decide that down the line people are willing to pay insane prices for a blend that is as elusive as Dodo bird gizzards, I would seal the bag intact in Mylar.

I'm bagging for long term storage and my own use, so I'm not too concerned about preserving branded packaging and split up anything that I get into multiple bags. I buy the 5 mil quart size bags, and can usually get a 1/2 lb. of tobacco into a bag. Probably makes more sense to break it up into 4 bags at 4 oz. a bag though. It will fit better and is more efficient to open up 4 oz. at a time for consumption.

Hi All. I'm sure this has been addressed here somewhere before. But since this thread is fresh. Along this topic. When I get the 4oz ziplock of bulk blend tobacco from P & C. I just put it right into a mason jar. Should I be taking it out of the bag? Thanks

Might be a barrier to aging or something? If I have two of the same blend of different ages, I'll leave one in the bag inside the jar. Otherwise I "decant." When I get 1 oz samples I leave them in a bag and put it in a larger ziploc with others (I have separate lat-bag, aro-bag, etc.). No issues.

Why take the chance? After my recent losses (albeit minimal quantities wasted) I'm done taking chances.
