The other day I was perusing a local auction house and ran across this lot: Obviously, that blue tin of unobtanium caught my eye...buying a pig in a poke? I wasn't sure if it was dried out or not, but Edgeworth slices are getting rarer than hen's teeth so I took a chance. To my surprise, the tobacco has the perfect moisture content for smoking and...Daayum, it smells heavenly! I paid $35 for the lot, probably could have gotten the tobacco for next to nothing if it wasn't for them meddling cigar smokers! The Edgeworth Flake looks like a good match for my 1885 Charles Maas meer....

Don't sherk on those two cigar/ette cutters (top right). They have a bit of a following and some are sought after.
Oh and btw, where are you hiding your lucky charm - you are ON A ROLL!!

If you paid $35 for the whole lot, you got a steal. I have seen tins of Edgeworth Sliced go for $40-50 a tin at pipe shows.
Nice find.

Great score, Charlie. Are there any markings on the Wally Frank pipe? Their "store" pipes were from many makers; some in England and Denmark too. Some carvers were real no-bodies like Peter Stokkebye, S. Bang and Ed Burak. You may have a real gem there.

Yeah, I have seen a tin occasionally at Pipestuds, and yeah.... you will pay dearly for it. As I was waiting over a few days for the auction to end, I read the tobbacoreviews contributions.... this is one of the blends that are universally well liked. I am headed to California's wine country in a few days, so I am going to smoke an inaugural flake there.

Other than a quick once over to see that it was really a beaut, I didn't look at the other marlins if any... I will be sure to check when I get home. Thanks for the info, I had no idea about that aspect of the Wally Frank history!

Charlie..Can I try your crystal ball so I know where to find deals like that? Check out local auction houses that hopefully have an online presence and use the search terms, pipe, tobacco, tobacciana, smoker, etc...

On the topside opposite is a smooth panel like this that has a "Viking" stamp...that is all I can see as far as nomenclature...Whoever made this pipe took their job seriously, and the drilling is spot on....It is 6"" and weighs a light 40 grams. The bowl is carbonized, so that is why I think the auctioneer listed it as "used. A search online of this particular nomenclature came up empty.

I've been a fan of Wally Frank for more years than I care to mention. The father of one of my high school classmates used to work for Wally Frank, and used to get cigars for me. I wasn't as interested in pipes at the time. (Dammit!) I have a few nice Wally Franks, but I could only wish to find a pipe like that one!

I scored some Edgeworth Slice off the bay about 5 years ago from the 70's. Stuff was heavenly. I am not sure the tin lasted a week and I am a one or two bowl a day smoker (usually). Those cutters are sweet as well - they going on the bay or are you keeping them?.

I am keeping the cutters. At first i was thinking of selling them, but aftere reading of people's preference for this and that cut, Idepending on the smoke, I figured that maybe i couls learn a thing or two.
As for that tin, It is a 100 gram tin for which I am thankful...it appears to be the Orlik Version, not the earlier but it still gets really good reviews.
