Has anyone any formulas for bowls per ounce? If my measurements are correct it would be about 4 good sized bowls per ounce. Yet, like Schrodinger's Cat, when I am not paying attention it seems like I get more.

7-10 bowls per ounce on average I read somewhere. What is average - who knows.

It's way more than 4 per oz for me. If that were my ratio, a 50 gram (1.76 oz) tin would only be good for 7 bowls, and I get a lot more than that from one tin. Agree though, if I measure it, it'll go down (collapse of the wavefunction blast it).

Yo Da
The measured amount of tobacco per bowl in the internationally sanctioned Slow Smoke events is 3 grams. Being that there are 28.3495 g/oz, this would calculate out to 9+ bowls per oz. However, there are a lot of bowl sizes, bigger and smaller. Dunhill's infamous Group sizes, mostly from 1 to 5 cover most of the range. But the bigger freehands, as well as Dunnie's ODA can take a bunch more tobacco. Flakes, especially when stacked and not rubbed out, can put a lot more tobacco into a given bowl, and in that case I find my 50g tins might last only 13 or so bowls, vs ribbons which would produce 16-17 bowls.

Obviously depends on the size of bowl. Using 3 gram per bowl average, overall you should get about 9 bowls per ounce. edit. Appears lestrout and I posted same thing about the same time, sorry for redundancy.

I'd been using an old meer calabash when I thought of it. It doesn't seem like a larger barrel, but I guess it is. The Cossack Meer is damned near a chimney. I guess I'll weigh a few pipes before and after loading so I can get a better idea. I think you guys are right and my figures are weighted by the size of pipe.

I think 3 grams is the fire starter tobacco for the Bradley Smoking Vehicle.

Depends on how much I like the tobacco. The stuff I do not much like seems to breed in the tin.

Like a Professor of mine at University said at when faced by a question from one of the bright sparks in class: "I don't know, and I don't care."

guess I'm greedy, as no matter the total, I always wish there were one bowl more.
