I have back issues which make stand hunting difficult for me these days. I can't melt into the tree for any length of time anymore. When I was in graduate school down in Bowling Green, I had a Cougar Speed Flight II which drew about 70 pounds if I recall correctly. I was money in the bank with it at 35 yards or less, almost like shooting free throws. Our bow season opened Labor Day weekend and ran through Jan 31. I believe it still does. Great way to put a doe in the freezer before gun season and a lot of fun in the snow and ice after the holidays when only the hardcore hunters were left in the woods.

I will accompany my son..I have no bow but he does...I may hunt in rifle season if I can go with a few people willing to help drag a deer due to my back issues

Good on you to take your son. I tend to prefer my fly rod these days as bluegills are a lot easier to get back to the truck and make a better sandwich topped with lettuce, tomato and tartar sauce too.

While I've fished for hundreds of whiting (and one hammerhead shark) in the Galveston island surf, my only hunting has been for one squirrel and one rabbit. Way fun, but we got to stalk around and not just wait in a blind. Have never used a bow, I like firearms, but the tastiest meat I've ever had was camping with some guys up in Oklahoma somewhere. They baited a deer on their parent's property and shot it with an AR. We toasted it on sticks over an open fire, and that was good eating man.

I was visiting a buddy that had retired up in the mountains of California.... we were sitting around drinking beers in the house and heard a "pop" and went outside. Mike had capped a young deer with his .44 magnum... someone said "Hey Mike, it isn't deer season is it?" He replied "No, and I don't believe in buying a license when I am basically over run with deer"
( not condoning his actions, just stating the facts)
Anyway, I had never liked liver and told him so... "Well, you never had my fresh liver dish" was his reply. He cooked it with onions and warned that it might give us "a little gas".
Understatement of the century, six guys in a Suburban headed out on a four hour drive to go fishing... I fortunately had a window seat because the beer/liver farts were rancid beyond measure.... we looked like a Suburban filled with dogs hanging their heads out.
But he was right.. that liver was phenomenal.

Deer, Elk and fish are the only things Frankfort, the smallest state capital in America, seems to be able to get right these days. Our DNR is excellent. Kentucky's whitetail herd is one of the finest in the country and, thanks to a stocking program in the 80s, we now also have the largest Elk herd east of the Mississippi which are now also spilling over into other border states as well.
Taylorsville Lake is a half hour from downtown Louisville. Given the pressure it faces, pretty amazing there are any fish in there at all; however, thanks in most part to our DNR, bluegill, crappie and bass are normally abundant and 10-20 pound "Whipers" (Cross between White bass and Stripers) aren't uncommon.
Sportspeople are on the the cutting edge of conservation and make a lot of good things happen.

Ps is doing well with our elk need. About 100 permits are issued with a high 90 percent harvest rate. The deer population is darn good...depending on who you ask. I see boatloads of deer at night that number in the hundreds when the family and I go spotting.

Archery season in Michigan starts sunday and runs until Jan 1. I will be in a stand most every weekend from oct 1 until nov 9. I will also take a few days in between to see how the week days treat me. Our herd here is in fair condition, but ehd really wiped us out about 2 years ago. Couple that with a hard winter that year and the deer herd is only back to about 60% of what it was 5 years ago. I'm looking forward to being back in the woods very nearly whole after a rough couple of hunting seasons.
