So I'm down at the Quicky Mart and the Nepalese guy comes out and fires up a cigarette. He's really young, maybe 24 or so, and he sees me set down my pipe to go inside. He asks me about it and looked interested, and I say I'll be right back. I go back with a bag of several tins and pipes, and he's surprised and interested. Is this legal? Yes, dude, it's tobacco, totally legal. He liked the smell of Erinmore Flake, but thought the tin of Aylesbury Luxury Flake was 'nasty'.
I ended up giving him a small cob and tin of 1Q I got for Christmas and hadn't smoked. He had me show him how to load it, and he had a lighter for his cigs, so I told him if he liked it, I'd bring him more. Don't worry Charlie, he's not getting any of my fancy tobacco you sent me, but overall a cool public pipe experience.
Not illegal dude, just tobacco

Good job! I have started several friends off that way. Four have become regular pipe smokers. Two just occasional. Fun to gift them pipes and tobacco.

I've gifted a total of 2-3 cobs to friends or acquaintances hoping to get them to switch, and even though they like the idea and smell of pipe smoking, it never has worked for me. They always end up "losing" it or misplacing it;Forgetting about it. Hopefully you'll have a new pipe buddy to go and smoke with now.

We'll see. It was cool to see him interested. He asked how to load it, which I did, and how to clean out the bowl. I showed him my Czech tool, but didn't have a spare, but he said he could find something in the store to substitute.
He said his family doesn't know he smokes cigarettes, and the whole time he acted guilty, like what we were doing was illegal or immoral. Pretty funny really.
I've got a bit of RLP-6 left from the windfall; I'll be sure to pack that next time I go to the QMart, and I'll be puffing on my bestest looking briar

Couple years back my boss expressed an interest in pipe smoking. Being my boss and all, I figured a cob wasn’t quite good enough. I gifted him one of my own handmade Windjammer’s. He has never smoked it, nor re-visited the conversation. I will say I have a bit of regret about that.

Lost a nice red Peterson Billiard the same way. Yep, cobs are the way to go.

Years ago I gifted some good pipes, tobbaco to a forum member who had moved, new job, finicall struggle. Never heard from him if he liked it or not. Really would have liked a heads up, some are not brought up with manners I guess.

A couple of people I gifted pipes, Czech tools, tobacco, and pipe cleaners... they never continued... granted, they weren't expensive pipes, but from here on out if someone expresses an interest I will invite them to a club meeting, if they show up, I will walk them to the cobs and supply the other items... if they continue, I will give them a briar. If they have some skin in the game it should lesson that issue.

I gifted a cob and some pipes once to a construction worker who was doing some work for us. He seemed happy and told me how he had smoked a few bowls during the following week. Then they finished up and I never heard from him. I hope he is still smoking. And btw, thanks for all the stuff Brad, sorry I used a false name on ya!!

When I was giving away most of the windfall, I had one guy say how poor he was, and could he have some free tobacco? He sent me his address, and when I Google Earthed it, he lived in a really nice farmhouse on a hundred acres of land. I emailed him I was really looking for poor folks, and he replied with a vicious and nasty email about how much I sucked, and that he only had one room in the house and was poor (like he didn't get to use the rest of the house).
I backed down to give him the benefit of the doubt and sent him this CARE pack (I subbed out the two briars before I sent it, but sent him five pipes and this tobacco):
Now I'm sorry, but that's a pretty nice CARE pack for someone without a freaking job to send you for free, and it included some of my favorite tobaccos, LTF, LNF and ODF, so was a real gift from a guy that was actually more poor than the recipient.
He didn't even send me a thank you. Then, two weeks later, put the whole thing up for sale for $200. I could have really used $200. I was pretty pissed off, but he was the only jerk that got a pack, everyone else was super nice and appreciative. Jerkwad.

It's sad when people are ungrateful. I love helping people out, even when my position to do so is questionable. Haha. I've given 1000$ guitars to broke friends who showed interest and I know they never plugged in once. This very weekend I gave my acoustic to a friend's teenage daughter. She spent the entire weekend learning to play the intro/chorus to Don't Fear the Reaper which was very satisfying to see (if not entirely great to hear). Haha. And now I have an excuse to get a new Martin.

That's awesome. When I bought my current acoustic, I only had a budget of $200, so I went to literally every Guitar Center and Mars Music in the entire metroplex, and played every $200 guitar in town. I was very pleased my favorite was an Epiphone AJ, because I'm a Gibson guy

Wow, that is sad that someone would do that. Luckily, this isn't the norm in our community.
