I know they switched from the old paint-can style tins to the regular flat tobacco tins, so that would give some idea. That was what, 2014?
But the new tins have a couple of codes on them. Anyone know if there's some way to figure dates?

I emailed Russ about some tins I'm cellering as well as the limited production RO Perique Blends and the Acadian Gold blends. This was his response:
Sam,
Dating The RO Series Perique Blends and Acadian VaPer is easy. There has only been one run done so far, and that was late July of 2016. The Perique Series and Acadian Series are truly limited. About 9 years ago, Mark Ryan decided to try making a barrel of Perique from each of the four sections of the growing area, rather than mixing them together. Each one is unique, and I was honored that Mark offered to allow me to make blends with them, but there is only one barrel of each of the four, so when it's gone, that's it. The same holds true for the Acadian. Mark and I had a conversation two years ago when I asked him if he ever tried to process Virginia like Perique. He ordered 800 lbs. of Virginia for processing on the spot, and by late May of 2016, it was ready. The reason we can't keep it going forward is because of the FDA deeming regulations. Every blend that was introduced after February 15, 2007 will either have to come off the market by August 8, 2021, or would have to undergo extensive (and expensive) testing to stay on the market. The profit potential isn't great enough to submit it, especially considering that they could disapprove the blend even after spending between $30,000 and $100,000. If Mark were to produce more of these tobaccos and they didn't sell out by that date, he would be stuck with those tobaccos with nowhere to go. Additionally, those same regulations prohibit me from creating any new blends. I appreciate your generous offer to give me feedback, but we can't make anything new, unfortunately. I hope this clears things up for you, and thanks for writing.
Thank you!

Reading Russ' response and it struck me that we may live to see a pipe tobacco 'black market.' haha

I think those rules have been put on hold for the time being.

I think those rules have been put on hold for the time being. I hope you are right, but I imagine that Russ has a pretty good sense of where we are headed....there are politicians that think confiscatory fees plus heavy regulation will keep producing golden eggs for the treasury to redistribute the smokers with. And there are politicians that don't really have an axe to grind with the smoker, but they act as congressional eunuchs who, instead of guarding the women's living areas, they are in place to guard the "process" and maintain "collegiality". Cynicism borne of experience.

I was looking for info on dating Bengal Slices, and I came here but didn't see the info I was looking for. I emailed Russ for confirmation, hopefully this helps someone. Bengal Slices and other RO tins have a 3 or 4 digit code at the bottom on the back. This code is the 1 or 2 digit month and 2 digit year of production, in the format (m)myy. So 723 is 07-23 or July 2023. 1023 would be October 2023.
