I think Jim would be the one to really differentiate, but I have a few thoughts on one, which may pertain to all.
So many people rename blends for their own stores. No news here.
I kept wondering about Sutliff Matches vs P&C Matches of the same codger.
I smoked Sutliff first, a few months ago. I got some sweetness and it was fine. Nothing spectacular. Couple weeks ago I tried P&C. I got less sweetness. I gave it another try and realized my sinuses had been messing with me. They were both very similar... but is P&C just repackaging Sutliff?
I finally got both blends in the same place, not an easy trick with my limitations. The cuts are so totally different, yet they both appear to have achieved the same ends.
If you want to take a trip and don't want to crack open a Sweet Cask tub get a few ounces of Sutliff. Slight differences are not really enough, unless a cut is so important.
Though loving to save by buying more I like the tubs. Can't misplace them. Like misplacing a bowling ball. Worth a few dollars more and two ounces less.

That's a solid review, David.

I have found few blends of the "match" variety that frankly, even come close to the originals. That's just a tough thing for the blenders to accomplish for a variety of reasons. The exceptional quality leaf in all categories that abounded back in the 60's and 70's is very hard to find these days, if not impossible. Factor in the aging of the quality leaf, too. An impossible task to imitate that!

I meant to add to this yesterday. What I am finding out from Jim's reviews, but also from experience, is that the matches are often better than the originals. The only difference was the 1936 Briggs which had mellowed so much it took on a flavor all its own.
I think this has to do with the tweaking the modern blenders did, realizing in many cases the bite and burn of the original. It's almost the easy way out to say I agree with Jim's Reviews. I will say, all are 5 Eggs Up and Easy... with Tabasco on the side.

Ah, good to know. I still have some of the original, and have been rationing it just like my dwindling stash of Mephisto.
