Chris was recently on pipesmagazine podcast and discussed this method. A good method for slowing down your smoke to combat tongue bite.

I've used the "breath smoking" technique for nearly thirty years. Never heard of Muttnchop, but Alan Kerslake does a good job explaining the process.

I'll have to post my recent video ... "How to Smoke Like a Freight Train".
Great tips on huffing down copious amounts of tobacco while stressed out and in a rush.

You are welcome...thanks to the other guys chiming in also. I did a variation of it instinctively, but this expands on it.

Chris makes great videos. I clench a lot when I smoke throughout the day so end up doing this a bit on a regular basis.

Charlie and Chasing, big thanks for this thread. Love the MCPiper. I have a habit of blowing into the pipe, especially if I top off and want to get it burning. I don't top off often. I am looking forward to trying this method on my first of the morrow

The trick to this one, is not so much drawing, but creating enough vacuum in your mouth to coax the smoke from the stem. Same amount of pressure when sending it back through the stem.

The trick to this one, is not so much drawing, but creating enough vacuum in your mouth to coax the smoke from the stem. Same amount of pressure when sending it back through the stem. Good point... I think that when that is practiced like that, the warm dry air goes back to the bottom of the tobacco heap where most moisture gets trapped, and makes it drier allowing the piper to have less leftover dottle resulting in a drier smoke and allowing the piper to have a better chance at having the smoke that “burns to a white ash to the bottom of the bowl” that sometimes eludes the smoker. Consequently, your briar will be drier sooner on it’s rest. Captain obvious checking in here...😉 Of course, I am stating what has already been stated.

Just read back over my first post, and without vocal inflection, I sounded like a jerk. Not my intention. Muttnchop sounded like he was new to the breath smoking method, and I posted Mr. Kerslake's video as he makes the technique look effortless with experience.

In Brian Levine’s podcast, Mutnchop said that one of his subscribers suggested the technique, that was what prompted him to do the video. When you posted Mister K’s video it was an aha! Moment for me, as it was obvious that this technique had been around for awhile.... I suspect Mutnchop had no idea either. Always good to hear another perspective on it.

I use this method a lot, maybe 50% of the time. It just feels natural to me.
