Submitted for your approval is my quandary. I rarely buy a pipe I can't pay from my kids' piggy banks. I have found three pipes in the category named in subject. Rossi (I have one) is a good smoke. I am looking at 40-50$ I have never owned a Sav. There is an unfinished in the 65$ range A fully named Sav that I also like is about 95$
I don't mind spending my kids' money on better quality. I don't really want to go over the model of each with y'all. Then it could descend into favoritism. Also, though I don't mind paying more, I don't want to pay more for little or no difference.
Let's say they are all in the Author 320 style. That's close enough. How should I go about this?

The Rossi pipes are great ! ( i have 4 rubino pipes now and looking to get another soon)
with the price point within brands that you listed
i guess it would depend on a few factors such as filter/no filter smooth/rustic new/used
and time to acquire your desired pipe: if you have the time and patience ..... then i would suggest searching ebay relentlessly for days/weeks/months at a time and wait for that special deal to come around you could probably end up with a great bargain by doing so

If you can't decide, I'd look at the 3 side by side & go with the one that speaks to you.
I own 2 out of the 3 that you listed. I have yet to purchase a fully named Savinelli, seen a few I'd like, but never pulled the trigger. Rossi are good pipes for the money & you know what you're getting, since you got one. The unfinished Savinelli Series III are hit & miss from what I've seen with drilling, fills & overall quality.

Now, I am not unhappy with it for 12$, but I see (now) that new ones can be had for 25$. It really is about the brand and smokability factor. If the sav smokes better I'll pay for it. Kids may not be able to go to college till they are thirty, but that's the price you pay. For the sake of example, let's say they are all rusticated filtered

Rossi pipes don’t use filters either....
I have had all 3, in the 320. I have sold the Rossi and my Trevi. They both smoked fine, but found I like the astetics with Natural Smooth finishes. I know grain doesn’t change how it smokes, but I personally find it more enjoyable. I have 8 Savinelli’s, various shapes and price points and every one is excellent.

Yeah, again, the style was not important. Frankly, I just saw a St Nick Sav Author that is floating my boat and anchors. But if it does not smoke better than a Rossi, I'll buy the Rossi

What I am hearing is the Savs may very well be worth the difference.
One of my unnamed criteria is a wide bowl, .9-1+ inches. Savs and Rossis have those, at least easier to find. Best smoker I ever had was a pot with a wide bowl, but the wide bowl is the most important.
I am going into heat over the Saint Nicholas EX pipes, so we'll see. Thanks to all.

This may be the winner. It is pretty much what I had years ago, save it is rusticated. Nice .9 or better bowl and is only a sawbuck (two fins) more than the unfinished

That lost out after all. I did buy a second pipe the same shape, but different brand. After talking with my Guru I went with the one pictured below. I kept eyeing this as I am tired of black stems.

I like that one best. Basil Meadows bought one similar to it about three years ago, and loves his. I was tempted to get one, too. I believe Basil's is rusticated.

Congrats & Enjoy. Can't quite read it, but it is the Dolomiti series? Savinelli has so many models it is hard to keep track of them all.

Congrats & Enjoy. Can't quite read it, but it is the Dolomiti series? Savinelli has so many models it is hard to keep track of them all. I got it from The Pipe Nook, or will have it... come Wednesday. www.thepipenook.com/store/c58/Dolomiti.htmlAll his pipe prices are competitive and he does get fresh ones, as I have been seeing. It was easier to pick from his supply then the endless variety. That said, had I wanted a Saint Nicholas, which would have been shaped the same, I would have bought at SPC. Yea verily, Savinelli has not figured out how to incorporate Red, Green, and a non-black stem at the same time. I went for caramel colored. This may be my most expensive pipe ever. Only possible one that might top it is my meer calabash. I bought it when I was drunk and I don't remember what decade (not me being funny this time).

I got the same one just a few days ago David. Love it. I think you're having a similar experience. Enjoy!
