Blakemar is an old British firm that still does things the old fashioned way. No pant on coating for them.

Interesting. I would like to know what it will taste like done that way. For me, it is basically like the "quick break-in" I know a couple of guys do: take new pipe, fill with baccy, light and go for a drive while keeping the pipe outside the window. (Not recommended. )

Charl, Blakemar has been doing that for over 100 years so I guess it works fine. When I get an uncoated pipe I just load it up and smoke it. I can't be bothered with the 1/3, 2/3 thing.

Oh, same here, more or less, depending on my mood and the pipe itself. With a thin walled pipe I would take more time, for example. I'm sure that Blakemar wouldn't do it if it didn't work. It really would just be interesting to try one and see what the taste is like. I don't think there are many that burn the bowls to carbonize.

Charl, I've been meaning to buy a Blakemar for quite a while and will do so in the next month. I'll let you know my experience once I get it....or them. They are very reasonably priced.

I love the taste of the first few bowls in an uncoated new briar. However, I hate the taste of the first few bowls in a pipe that has stain in the bowl, like a Peterson. Bowls that come with a coating of some sort such as waterglass are pretty much neutral from the start, though some do impart a slightly funky taste.
