My brothers, me and three friends, rockhounding in Utah a couple of weeks ago. As seen from my brother's drone. As you can see, from how tiny we appear, it was way the hell up there. Shining times.

Another great shot of the San Rafael Reef. Really cool pictures. Was there any specific type of rock you were looking for?

Another great shot of the San Rafael Reef. Really cool pictures. Was there any specific type of rock you were looking for?At the San Rafael area, we were hunting for a jasper that is red, orange, purple and pink. The amount of each color can vary quite a bit, so the material can be quite stunning. Makes pretty tumbled stones or jewelry. There are geode-like nodules of it all through the region. It is easy to find lots of nice samples. Also looking for grape agate and any other agate. Picked up a piece or two of Yellowcat redwood and some copralites as well over in Yellowcat Flats and the Poison Strip area.

My best Army buddy lives in Ogden. I flew out there in 2007 and 2011. We took his jeep out in the Red Rock country, drank a bunch of home brew and believe it or not, actually found some places in the area to catch a few fish for supper. Pretty friggin cool stuff. We're thinking about a mambo Montana fly fishing trip as soon as he gets his youngest son off to college.
Great pics Don. Thanks for sharing.

The rock paintings are in Sego Canyon, Utah. I think the Ute tribe manages and protects them. Idiots deface and shoot at them unfortunately. There are Ute pictographs, pecked into the rock with another stone. Those are vet cool in their own right and go back 150-200 years. The Fremont people made art back around 1200AD in the canyon. The oldest art pictured above is archaic period, 2500-4000 years old. It is pretty special. The whole canyon is holy ground to the Ute tribe.

Very cool! If you find any soapstone locations... anywhere, pick up a bunch. I am trying to find some to make soapstone bowls for Falcons.

Really cool, Don thank you. And it is pretty easy to see why a people would attach spiritual significance to such an incredible place.

I’ve made the drive from Las Vegas to Denver a few times. Utah is amazing. Watch for Elk. There monsters Indeed. Frequent accidents here on the highway. People from the cities in Colorado driving south just will not believe the road signs warning them. Stray cattle and wild horses, too. Always sad to see. I have helped clean up the mess many times since I am near the highway.
