If a gun is not on your person it should be locked up!

Almost all the time I only have adults in my house so I'm not very worried about kids getting my guns. The question in my mind is do I lock them up or keep them where I can get to them quickly.I keep them where they can't be seen but only a few feet from my bed.

It is certainly worth discussing and a reminder of sorts..yesterdays crawler can be today's climbing toddler. It is always good to review your particular circumstances and adjust as needed. I have guns all over the house, none locked up and all loaded..well out of the reach of my 2 year old granddaughter...as soon as she is old enough she will learn about the destructive capabilities of a firearm and the responsibility of owning one...and, before that same point, most of my guns will be more secure, and locked up..I can definitely see where I might for a segment of their life only have the one on my person not locked up. There is no one size fits all however, and it is worth discussing witthout having to go political. Kids living remotely in a farming community that (relatively) never have other kids coming over, live in a different dynamic than a city kiddie with a lot of friends checking in. www.lewrockwell.com/2003/11/richard-poe/the-merced-pitchfork-murders/

They will find em. My oldest son found my Star PD and shot the TV with his younger Brother in front watching it. That's the only time I was ashamed of myself as a parent. When I went to his room I will die with his wimpering look on his face. I found out later he told his Mom he had been playing with it for a while. You got kids, Lock em up. Mike you have done us a service. Thanks

Today my sister called and asked if I would watch her Grandson, my Grand Nephew for a little while. This inquisitive little 5 yo is why all mine are locked up.

This is valuable advice. I see no reason why this thread should or would turn into controversy. This isn't about that, it's about being aware and responsible. Thanks for sharing, Mike.

At one time, I belonged to a gun forum and expressed how I was glad that I got a gunsafe, so that I could secure my firearms...even without having young ones around. A gentleman pm'ed me and told me vaguely what happened to him and suggested that I always be cognizant of changing factors that require different levels of gun security. "I once prided myself as being quite accomplished in gun safety, nonetheless it came back to bite me". With seeing his city name and some keywords, I was able to use Google Fu to read his story. He said that 'nobody ever used the spare bedroom." This would be pretty devastating. blog.mlive.com/grpress/2007/11/grandfather_devastated_after_b.htmlIt will haunt him to the grave, I am sure.

Refraining from any gun politics, I will simply say that locking up your guns is essential. It seems like every other day I'm reading about a kid who got a hold of a gun and it went off because they were playing with it (as kids do without realizing the danger). I remember when I was much younger, my dad owned a few guns and a couple BB guns. He would let me play with the BB guns, but one time I cocked the rifle and while playing with it and it went off. Fortunately it was just a BB gun and the little pellet harmlessly went flying into our laundry chute. It scared the shite out of me though and ever since I've taken guns, real other BB much more seriously.
I eventually took a firearms safety class to learn about safe handling of guns (which is something I would recommend for anyone who has children in the same house as guns).

Lots of great advice here. A PSA for the group. I don't own any guns, I have an Italian wife.

I don't own any guns, I have an Italian wife. That's probably for the best. Death by gunshot doesn't sound nearly as awesome as death by stiletto through the skull. I'm pretty sure you've secured yourself a good death full of suffering. Whatever afterlife you believe in, if any at all, will no doubt embrace you for the courage you demonstrated in life.

Bad news guns, I am sorry to read of it, it is different in U.K. I suppose. As my Grandad would have said as First World War vet , " you don't hear the bullet that kills you " but as policeman that generation were strict, but he never used or carried a gun as a policeman. I feel sorry for the young generation. Keep the peace guys.
