When I was about 8 or 9 years old I lived in the foot hills of NC. My grand father who was born in 1880 told me that him and a friend would pack a mule and trek on foot across the mountains to visit relatives in Johnson City.It took them 3 days each way.That was before cars. I've been there but it was a good number of years ago.
