... to what degree do you like them? Is a little DFK enough, or do you like a hearty dose? Which blends with DFK work best for you?

Love it! Large amounts are great at times but I also love how it can be used as an accent. Added to a Va/Per it creates magic. GLP Triple Play and Jack Knife Plugs are favorites. Watch City #558, Exhausted Rooster and Firestorm come to mind as well. However, the top dog for me is Brown Bogie ... one of the best IMHO.

Newminster superior round slices is what I like for a dark fired blend. Hard to beat the price on it also.

Dark strong kentucky is a favorite of mine, the wife loves the room not on it. I like the new c&d bluegrass pretty well but orlik did it better in my opinion. It just seems to work better in a flake.

Used to love ODF, but I overdid it and it has fallen out of favor with me. I enjoy Orlik DSK and Heinrich DSF, though I honestly don't get any sort of blast of Dark Fired out of either.
ODF is now an example of too much Dark Fired for me. To my tastes these days, Dark Fired works best as an accent.
Newminster SRS is one I really need to try. This is why we need to get the box pass going again.

I like the flavor of DFK, but the nick kick is a bit much when it's by it's self. I'll have to research to find it in a blend, other than my own. My DFK mix is about 50/50 mix with unflavored black cavendish.

Absolutely love Orlik- DSK. It's like beer, malt, and baking chocolate with molasses.

After reading Sparks' post, I guess I have yet to experience a heavy dose of the stuff. I'll have to check back with the thread later to see if anyone lists a real DFK-laden blend.

Have you tried Brown Bogie? Smokey goodness with just a slight hint of the Lakeland essence. Attachments:

I've recently discovered DFK as a condiment (and sometimes a little more). I.E. Viprati and War Horse Ready Cut. While I enjoy them in these blends, I haven't tried them as a dominant component.

Kentucky Fried Chicken sounds better to me at the moment.
It's flavorful stuff. I'm not sure if I want more of DFK right now.

Another vote for Brown Bogie...this is a new 500 gram rope. After three years of jarring with a little bit of whittling...regardless of how it looks, still plenty moist. I need another bulk rope when it comes back in stock.

ODF RR. But beware, this stuff is addictive GLP's Jack Knife Plug and Triple Pllay do it for me too.

DFK is possibly my favorite leaf, along with VA, burley, orientals, Latakia and perique.😀
ODF and Bold Kentucky are both excellent. Viprati, Firestorm, El Niño, Solani silver and Doblone D’oro are also favorites.

Have you tried Brown Bogie? Smokey goodness with just a slight hint of the Lakeland essence. I wanted to state: It's a *very* *very* slight Lakeland essence, IMO. I am not much of a fan of Lakeland, so if others are not as well, don't be afraid of this one. Brown Bogie is excellent.

I've noticed many blends contain DFK where I would never expect them. A perfect example is H&H Black House. In the following excerpt, Russ describes how it ended up in Black House: "I had taken a lot of samples with me to the Raleigh show, and during a short break, I loaded up a bowl of one of my newer blends, Steamroller, and stepped outside. Steamroller was created for people who want a decent amount of Vitamin N, but also want some complexity. As I was puffing, I noticed that same “catch” in my throat that I got from the 759, so my answer was somewhere in that blend. In giving it some thought, I figured that it was either a bit of dark air-cured Burley, or some dark fired Kentucky. Luckily, the gentleman I was working with has some air-cured available, so I added a bit to the blend and it was closer, but not quite right, so I figured that the missing element was dark fired." Burleys / dark fired are my usual smoke, so yes I am in the love it camp.
At the top of the list for me is Old Dark Fired, Irish Flake and Brown Bogie.

DSK and PH strike the right balance for me. I agree with the view that df works better as a condiment versus being the entire show.

Mac Baren ODF has fallen out of my rotation. Solani #660 Silver Flake is still in, my go to when I want DFK which is rare these days. I prefer it in a meer which I smoke more during the winter months when spending less time outside in the work barn and more chilling in front of the wood burning stove in the house.
