Why Cat really quit building over the road engines. The early 5ek motors were routing the exhaust back through the air brake system and the EPA caught em. The C10 would blow camshafts out the side of the head going down hill with the Pac brake engaged. Most C10 engines were lucky to make out of the yard in the morning due to poor electronics. CAT was never able to fix the issues with the 5ek injector seals and head gasket failures. Paccar started the ground breaking for the DAF engine plant basically kicking CAT to the curb. That being said if you are pulling 150 tons of bulldozer on a low boy in a hole no engine had the low end torque of 3406 variant. Add twin turbo to that and pull Jack Rabbit pass without breaking a sweat. Thanks...I reckon that the devil is in the details....if I remember correctly it was the CAT dealership receiving clerk that informed me about them pulling out of the over-the-road market....he left out the part about getting caught. Yes, that engine has withstood the test of time, a lazy driver not keeping an eye on the coolant could spell disaster....the "bearing roll in" is no big deal, just figured it as part of the PM scedule on the b variant.

Right on the money Charlie. The 3406 is variant of the 1693 that cat put in everything from scrapers to wheel loaders. The old 1693 had mechanical valve adjusters up top the 3406 moved em down in the block. The D343 was the marine version. Cummins really tried hard with the small and big cam motors but they would rock the liners. The big cats would start losing oil pressure and that's when you needed to roll bearings. Of course now days all the big fleets govern the top speed taking all the fun out of driving.

Yep, the 3406 was a workhorse. The underground equipment operators abused our equipment without mercy and the engines seldom gave trouble. Replaced a few injectors but not much more. The machine would be trashed before the engine gave out normally.
