Hello, I have 2 pipes at my disposal and have recently converted to a daily smoker. My increased use has raised some issues. The first being with a Mr Brog Viking. Its a pear wood pipe and the issue I'm having is with the connection between stem and wood. It has become quite loose and I lose draw with it, as well as worry about it sliding apart whilst smoking. Is there a way to tighten this up so I can safely smoke it? My second issue is really due to being limited to a single pipe now. I smoke several bowls daily and primarily Captain Black Royal, though I have a pound of 1Q on the way. Since it's quite a wet smoke, and I evidently drool a lot, my pipe bowl has become sodden and has to go quite a while between smokes to avoid a horrific, snake venom like taste. Even with rest, both pipes have retained a rather awful taste. I have heard if pipe sweetening products, but due to financial constraints, as well as newness to the area (I don't know where to find locally) I was wondering if there is a recipe for a diy product I could try, and perhaps other recipes to clean them overall. I'm really hoping to restore these to operation. Thanks for the welcome and for reading this.

I have swabbed super glue inside the mortise on a couple of pipes. Moisten with water first before trying that. Sometimes coating the tenon with bees wax (and the mortise) will do it too.
Clean the pipes after use. Hot water works great, or any alcohol. My preference is something that is drinkable. I am finishing an old bottle of vodka as cleaning solvent now, but will switch to rum when that is gone. I dip pipe cleaners in the alcohol (in a shot glass) and then swab out all parts of the pipe. It dries quickly.

I don't know how tight your money is. But I would suggest getting some cobs. They are great pipes an cheap an dry out very fast. Easiest way to set a rotation going. But always get in the habit of wiping them down running cleaners thru them.

Scrooge is saying what I was thinking; get a Missouri Meerschaum or two. They smoke dry and are good for aromatics especially since they are so absorbent.

^^ The salt and alcohol or even just alcohol and pipe cleaners is what you need for those pipes. Swab them out with 99% isopropyl rubbing alcohol dipped pipe cleaners and run them throughthe entire airway of the pipe until cleaners start coming out clean and as white as they went in. Let it air dry for a few hours and then give it a try after it's cleaned up. Will make a massive difference. The cobs are a great idea as well until you get a couple more briar pipes.

Buy many more pipes so they can rest between smokes! And, yes, cobs and more cobs will do.

If budget permits, I would suggest looking at Rossi pipes in the Vittoria line. At $40.00, they are hard to beat and are quite respectable smokers.

At $30,you can get a bag of "smokeable seconds" from MM.That would give you an instant rotation. That would be the way to get going fast and cheap. I've used super glue on the tenon a couple of times to tighten the fit, worked fairly well for me.

You might check out discounts and price reductions on unfinished Savinelli pipes through the holidays, finest kind. Orlik Golden Slice is also an affordable mild all day smoke which may be worth trying.

I sweeten and freshen my pipes with 151 proof rum, or cast strength whiskey. But that won't help if you only have one pipe. Like the others suggested, get so cobs. Also, ebay has tons of cheap Willard and Grabow pipes that are go for another 50 years with a good cleaning for less than a 10 bucks. I have $5 briars that smoke as well as $300 pipes.

To tighten the stem, I get a taper pin, (hardware store, used for retaining gears, propellers, etc), that just fits the opening of the stem. Place the end of the stem in boiling water for a few seconds and push the taper pin in just enough to expand it slightly.
