I snagged these poor unfortunates off ebay this week. After looking at them for quite a while I decided that I will try my hand at converting the bent ones to military mounts with metal bands. I ordered some brass tubing today and will try metal spinning to form it to the proper profile. This should be fun. Oh, all 5 pipes for 11 bucks! They include a Willard, a Whitehall , two Kaywoodies and an unknown checkmark. I like bents and checkmarks so I think I did well.

This should be a fun project. I'm sure that all of us look forward to seeing your progress as you move forward.

Enjoy the restorations. I have made a couple of bowls only buys on Ebay as well and lucked out having spare stems in the parts box to fit them.

Bamboo, me too. I will attempt acrylic on these or get crazy and buy some vulcanite rod stock. I want to attempt scratch built stems, so these are going to be the victims. I got pretty lucky and found stems on ebay for about a dozen other estate pipes. Lots to do this winter.

I was blessed with appreciation while my brothers got all the practical talent. Looks like fun

Nevadablue, Are a few of those threaded shanks, or are the bands just fooling my eyes?

Ken, you're a man after my own heart! Refurbishing really lost causes is a great challenge and so fun! You are also a better man than me as I have no idea how to make a stem! Wishing you good success, and hopefully getting to see the results.

Looks like threaded shanks. Not sure how I will handle that, probably drill them out. UNLESS I am lucky and have something that fits in the parts box. But, I am looking forward to the challenge of turning them into military mounts.
I have some ideas about stem making, but have never done one yet. We will see.
edited to add, looks like the Willard and the 2 Kaywoodies are threaded.

I avoid threaded tenons since it is hard for me to find an exact match. Interested to see what you come up with.

It will be interesting to me too. I have never removed one of the threaded mortise things. It may be a chore, but it is probably aluminum and shouldn't be too hard to drill out. Famous last words...

Looks like someone really enjoyed smoking that apple.

Drilling them out smooth is an option.
If you want to try and remove them, heat typically will loosen the glue on older pipes and let you remove that sleeve. The problem is, you may then have a very large mortise.

That will be worth trying, the heat that is. This is a learning experience after all. Thanks for the tip.

It will be nice to see the finish products on this adventure.
I picked up a GBD with a missing stem, foundan image with the model number, a long graceful bent...I am going to send the pipe with a pic to Mike Myers at Walker briar works, he has the correct Rondelle's for the stem, and the pipe in question is a somewhat rare one that warrants the expense.

They arrived today. We are in a medical emergency situation with my wife now, so it may be a while until I get to work on the pipes. We are resting now in a hotel next to the hospital in Salt Lake city now. Hopefully her doctor can handle things tomorrow. We thought it best to get to the hospital just in case.

We will pray for a speedy recovery for the Mrs. You probably already know this, but pay close attention to the goings on with her providers. At two different hospitals, my wife was in serious danger of losing her life because of mistakes and incompetence... anyone going into the hospital needs to have a loved one as an advocate, you reallly have to be proactive... I cannot overstate this.

Best wishes to you both and hope for a speedy recovery. +1 on what Charlie said as well ... keep an eye on those providers. If you run across any Lab or Blood Bank questions that are unclear, feel free to give me a shout. Take care!

Thanks everyone. We lived through the tests today and they found nothing significant in addition to what we already knew. It appears that we have to deal with some nasty stomach ulcers. We got home this evening. More tests in a couple of weeks. I like the new doctor, she seems very capable and is a very caring person. My wife likes her so that should help a lot.
Back on the original topic, Some brass tubing arrived today. I will try my hand at metal spinning one of these days. It appears that 5/8" OD tubing will be perfect for making sleeves for the military mounts I want to install on a couple of these pipes. I also got the 5/16" Delrin rod today. Now to rest, relax and enjoy being home with my lady.

Oh, the checkmark bowl turned out to be a B B & S (Barling sub-brand)! I lucked out on that one. See my Barling thread.
