On my car radio I can pick up both AM and FM stations very well.In my house though I've had 2 or 3 portable radios that pick up FM stations well, but almost no AM stations.Do I just need a better radio or some special antenna.Anyone have a solution to this problem?

I am not sure . I do not believe AM stations put out the Watts they did in the hey day. I have 2 local AM stations (3 miles away) that are difficult to pick up on my Sangean Table Top.

I've had the CC Radio Plus for years - fantastic AM reception - and they also supply a twin-coil ferrite antennae booster for really tough reception areas. ALSO has a weather station dial and HAM. Get it, you won't regret it!!! Check out their latest AM radio selections! www.ccrane.com/

AM just doesn't get through like FM. You might try installing an outside antenna. A HAM operator could could tell you how to tune one specifically for AM frequencies ,,,there's a formula for the length but I don't remember it.

I got a Sirius satellite radio for the home and in my car and never looked back. The local AM stations in my area have horrible programing so I don't miss them.

A better antenna is the trick see'en AM waves are higher then FM it makes them harder to pick specially as said before with all the interference nowadays.

I still listen to my AM new station every morning. Get great reception where the radio is now, but at Christmas when we have to re-arrange for the tree... it turns to shite. Amazing what 15 ft. difference can do.

Amazing what 15 ft. difference can do. I use to listen to AM radio religiously every morning before I left for work with a smoke and a cup of Joe in the kitchen on an old radio from the 50's I had restored. It was the best little radio I've ever had but, if I moved it from it sitting place on the counter just a few inches the reception would change drastically.

Where I live baseball games are often exclusively carried on AM stations. Unfortunately, AM reception in my house is dodgy at best. What a timely thread!

Paul Harvey, sadly missed! The CC Radio Plus made by Crane is the real deal in my 20+ year experience. I don't trust my ball games to anything less.

When I first moved to SW Fla in the early 80's I could pick up the NCAA tourney off a car AM radio. WOWO 50k watts. My father was a Cards fan because he could listen to KMOX out of St Louis from Indiana. And yes, baseball on the radio is the best way to watch it ...sans the bleachers at Wrigley..

I lived on free TV and radio for thirty years until I retired and decided to splurge a little on cable and WiFi before going to the next phase. I have two CC Crane II radios and they rock. Cleveland/Atlanta/St Louis range from Louisville, no worries.
Most AM radio stations are required to turn down their signal during night hours. I don't know why but got it first hand from the manager of an AM station here in Louisville.

(1/4 wave, use 234 / frequency in Mhz)

Here in the DFW area of N. Texas AM radio is predominately a right wing megaphone so I don't listen to it very often but my mother lives by it. She listens on a black bakelite case RCA tube AM radio she bought when she and my father got married in 1944! It sits on her kitchen table where it's been since I was a kid. Takes awhile for the tubes to warm up but when they are it comes in crystal clear. 'Course it helps that we live in the middle of several AM stations a few that go back to the '20/'30s.

Another vote for the Ccrane radio made by Sangean...I bought mine probably 25 years ago and long after the warranty was out, the LCD screen started having issues, I contacted them in Fortuna Ca., and they paid for and installed the new screen... I never plug it in, the batteries last forever... still going strong, it gets turned on before the coffe pot does.
The small pocket sized one I use in the bathroom.
Art Bell was another fan of the radio... great sound tailored for AM radio!

I got me a old Sony picks up Tv, weather and am/fm probably twenty years old it been a good one. As a kid we all had 9volt radios taped to the handlebars if it was a good song you had to keep going the same direction or lose reception.

Not much worth listening to on AM radio anymore. I can listen to baseball games on my phone and ask Siri for weather and I don't have to worry about losing the signal as I get out of range while traveling or interference from thunderstorms or power lines. FM stations have taken over talk radio, whether it be politics or sports and a plethora of podcasts and satellite stations are available. I don't even know if the AM radio in my car works.

Like PaPipeguy, I got XM back in 2005 and never looked back. Especially when they merged with Sirius and had a weekend deal: "$350 for the life of your current radio". I've had free XM all these years, and have a small XM antenna in the den so I can listen to it throughout the house.

Larry, here's a List of 50kW AM Radio Stations in the USA for your review. We have a local radio station here in Bend called KBND. Its 100.1FM and 1110AM. We receive excellent reception from both frequencies. I enjoy both, and do enjoy listening to good talk, news, and sports. There's always something good on AM if you have an inquisitive mind. In the car, I have SiriusXM and generally listen to Ch62 (Bluegrass). Crystal clear too and great sound. Check-out the AM Radio Reception Guide, and it should answer a number of questions for you

Before Digital ruined my hobby, I was an avid Shortwave and AM signal chaser. To add insult to injury, KGO, San Francisco changed formats and dropped Dr Bill Wattenberg. Since then my Grundig and G.E SuperRadio mostly collect dust.

Before Digital ruined my hobby, I was an avid Shortwave and AM signal chaser. To add insult to injury, KGO, San Francisco changed formats and dropped Dr Bill Wattenberg. Since then my Grundig and G.E SuperRadio mostly collect dust. Dr. Wattenburg was pretty much the gold standard in talk show hosts... he is brilliance with the gift of common sense in spades... Bruce Williams was pure gold also... and Jim Eason of KGO was very gifted. Glad KGO got rid of Bernie Ward when it was found out he was preying on young boys.... I knew he was a scumbag from waaaay back.I still like AM radio, traffic reports have saved me many hours from heading into really bad traffic problems, and I like keeping up on local issues.... FM hosts in that regard around here are pretty lame by comparison.
