Does the enjoyment of the Sutliff Edward G. Robinson's Pipe Blend benefit from being smoked in specific pipes? This is a carryover conundrum and question that I posed to the estimable Jim 'JimInks' Amash in a different online venue. My contention, based on my limited experience, is that I've found that EGR smokes much better, immeasurably so, in one of several specific pipes that I own. In other pipes, well, not so much. Why is this so, is the question. What is your experience, if any, on this apparent phenomenon? Should JimInks decide to post here on this subject I would consider that to be an interesting, helpful and altogether pleasing turn of events. So there it is. I look forward to your opinions with considerable interest.

This is the answer I gave Ed and am reposting it here for those who are curious about the discussion.
I wouldn't quite say that. I have pipes that smoke St. James Flake and Stonehaven better than other pipes do, and now that I think about, I could list a number of blends that I have found smoke better in some pipes than they do in others. What I think you are experiencing is that EGR is the kind of mild aro that tends to do better as it seasons a bowl. Some blends need to season briar before revealing their inherent flavors to best and full advantage, particularly if they aren't flavor bombs.

Blends like EGR do well in slightly wider bowls where the flavors can meld and marry better. Shape 320 / author / bulldog, etc.
Conversely, straight Va does better for me in taller, more narrow bowls where the flavor can concentrate as it goes.

Same goes with Wilke aros like Runcake and #515, though both are deeper flavored aros than EGR.

Actually, I've found that EGR smokes better for me in the wider bowls, as you've found. But the more I smoke it in pipes in which it has smoked well for me, I've also found that it smokes even better in those pipes over time. So both insights seem to be very valid.

I have found that EGR will sometimes finish wet. I have yet to determine if it is the tobacco or pipe choice. I do agree that it is a blend enjoyed in a larger pipe. Have yet to smoke it in a Meer, but may remedy that later today.

Agree on the wider bowls. Also find it better in bigger bowls. But I smoke it in all pipes anyway. Although I smoke a lot of it in cobs, I do find it better in briars. Never finishes wet for me ....always burns to ash.

EGR has got to be one of my favorite blends. It's the only aro that I will smoke in my Dunhill. But I do smoke it all of my pipes and have found that I enjoy that taste and have a better smoke when using a dublin or other narrow bowl such as a small billiard. My Ol-Vic has something of a stack and works better with drier english style blends. The one wide pot I had,I gave to my son.Just didn't feel right, the bite and the hand.

Smoked a couple bowls in a some Meers. The smokes were somewhat indifferent to my tastes. Reinforced my opinion that this is definitely a Briar blend.
