That's how much a Da Vinci painting just sold for..If I wanted to get rid of that kind of bucks I would donate it to help sick kids and their families.

Whoever bought that panting is a person of extraordinary means. Since we don't know who the buyer is it may be possible that he, or she, may have given an equal amount or more to charitable causes. So, I'll reserve judgement until we learn the idenity of the purchaser.

First of all if you have $450 million to spend on a painting,Cool Deal.That you did
is your buisness,not mine.But,that means that $450 million is back into the economy,
not sitting in a bank account.It's paying fees and wages,and opening access to
other third party purchases.
Second,these folks who buy these painting,usually put them on loan to a museum or gallery
that has better security and insurance.That means that blokes like me can go and visit and
study them at little or no cost.
So the name on the title changed,as long as they didn't buy it for salvage we're all winners.

So on the one hand, we're slamming the anonymous buyer for making a killing on the painting and assuming he's probably a greedy, uncharitable bastard. And on the other, we're praising him on the assumption that he probably is charitable because he's rich and because of trickle-down economics, and will probably make the art accessible to the public? Just clarifying....  |

Not from me ... I just know that money could have done a TON of good elsewhere. Sotheby’s stands to do very well on this but not so sure about how much is going into "circulation" so to speak.

I see both points as equally valid, personally even with Warren Buffet’s Checkbook as mine, I could not justify spending that kind of money on a painting. But a person certainly has the right to spend their money as to how they see fit. My uncle bought a Learjet some years back, some people in the family got pretty pissed that he spent it so “foolishly” at a time that they were facing hard times. The most vocal critics seemed to be the ones that had poor money management skills. I am not projecting that dynamic on anyone here, just sharing an observation of what transpired in our family.  Here is my Painting, Artist AD Greer painted a picture for Will Rogers, Lindbergh, and LBJ. Wife and I love roses, it's a large picture, 4/3, on my bedroom wall I can see it when I get up, makes my day, it has tripled in value, but that's not why I bought it. |

The seller was a Russian oligarch. Forget about the proceeds going to charity. As for the anonymous buyer, it is too soon to judge. I agree with you about the giant homes. I always wondered if they made the money through hard work, luck, or crime. I know a lot of people who did it with hard work. But they were rare birds. My brother went from nothing to millions by working 18-20 hour days for years. He bought a ranch. So did my last boss that still works harder than any of his employees. The fancy house doesn't seem to be the favorite for real people. Unless they was shootin'at a coon and up through the ground.....

With a setup like that, it would be easy to turn into a hermit... hobbies in the garage, man cave upstairs....I typically work 60 hours each week, and commute about 9 hours.... if I had that setup, the wife would probably be a barn widow. |

Our house is 3,800 sq ft and I still have to smoke in the garage. Ours is pretty close to ya'lls. 3650 or so. My man cave is only 350 to 400, but as I've probably mentioned in previous posts, I had it built with a high velocity panasonic whisper quiet exhaust fan pulling through 3 ducts located in the ceiling throughout the room. All in all it's a pretty good set up that, for the most part, keeps my cigar and pipe smoke out of the rest of the house. My only regret is that I didn't build it larger. |

Art speculation is just another means of investing for most parties involved- meanwhile the artist generally dies poor and miserable. It's the way world is, I know, but I can't help but feeling bitter. I hear it often from friends; how they envy my ability as an artist. Believe me when I say it goes both ways. I wish I possessed a measure of their ambition and focus.
I remember being observed by a friend as I drew some silly sketches for his nephew and he said he'd give anything to be able to do that. I told him we could swap brains, but then it would be him checking his bank account to see if he had enough gas money to drive to my posh home and drink my wonderful scotch. Haha
Wanted to add that I am not boasting. I'm mediocre at best. Certainly no danger of someone paying for my work. Hahaha

Bonanza, I love your mancave. In the near future when I buy a home, the basement shall be my lair and I always planned on building a similar exhaust system. I had the idea at my buddy's country club. They have these fans (I believe the brand was smoke eater) and you couldn't smell a cigar in the place. I feel like wives are the driving force behind this particular technology. Haha
Also, I finished Anthem. Rand is a decent writer and her love for metaphor is akin to my own. I feel like we could have some fun arguments. Haha. I enjoyed it overall. Thank you for the suggestion.

What surprised me about the sale of the painting is that its provenance is so sketchy. Everything indicates that it was not just repaired but that it's practically a new painting atop of a sketch! At least to my mind, it's the least impressive of all the known Da Vinci paintings.
