Most of the articles that you read about Bing Crosby tell you how he designed the 'Bing' Pipe, and had it made for him by Ed Kolpin of Tinderbox fame. Savinelli came out with the 'Bings Favorite' line to honor him for making his Savinelli tobacco pipe part of his image. But did anyone ever associate Bing with Barling pipes? When Barling celebrated their 150th Anniversary, they created a limited number of Commemorative sets, one of which was offered to Bing. Here is the correspondence sent by the respective parties.... Thought this to be an interesting piece of pipe trivia. I wonder if Bing ever smoked them!

I recommended a Basil Meadows Bing. He makes a great pipe with the correct Merchant Special specs at a reasonable price. I got the first one a couple years ago, and it smokes like a dream.

When I first published these letters, with the owner's permission, in my Pipedia article on Barling, I thought it would be fun for others to know that one of our more illustrious pipe smokers had been gifted with such a fabulous gift. A small number of these sets were made from Barling's finest stock and were given to celebrity pipe smokers as part of a program to promote the brand.

Are those the pictures of the cased pair that show at the top of the Pipedia Barling page?
Do you know who any of the other celebrities were that received pipes?

I always give credit to my sources as it's just being respectful and honest. All of the photos on the Pipedia Barling page have attributions for their source, except in instances where that source gave permission to use the materials but declined to be credited. But I'm sort of old school about such things. In today's world, people have gotten used to appropriating others work without permission or without acknowledging it. Intellectual property theft is now just everyday behavior.

Sadly, it is getting ingrained in our culture... pirating songs and movies are acceptable and justified with especially many younger people.... with the justification being “It isn’t like Leonardo DiCaprio, won’t be able to fuel his private jet”.

What does frost my hide is when someone takes credit for my work. I remember going in for an interview whereat I showed my portfolio and the interviewer accused me of stealing another's work because several of the same images had appeared in that person's portfolio. I said that I would be glad to show him the initial stages and work ups on any of the work in question, because I kept them, and to ask if their hire could do the same. Needless to say, I didn't get the job. But, they fired the impostor. And one poor dumbell brought "his" portfolio to a job interview that I was conducting and proceeded to show me my own work, not realizing that I had created it. I confiscated his portfolio and had him escorted out.

The nice thing about pipedia, is that underneath the pics of the awesome pipes it generally says “From the private collection of”. It helps inform us better on our obituary searches.
