I bought a small thing of this stuff so I could get familiar with it in time for the slow smoke contest at the Chicago Pipe Show.
The first thing I noticed about it was the ghastly smell. It's sickly sweet, like sweet potatoes or perhaps squash except the baby food version. Lighting it up I noticed it doesn't take to lighting well which I suspect is part of the reason they chose this particular 'bacco for the contest. It has more taste than an aromatic, but again not an entirely satisfying one. I'd say the taste is reminiscent of burnt popcorn. It burns fairly cool and dry in comparison to what I've been smoking, Three Star Blue and Three Star Bronze. The leftover, or dottle as I'm told it's called, is actually more than I'm used to. The ash mixes with the tiny bits of tobacco which has actually absorbed the moisture to make a nasty paste-like putty in the bottom of the bowl.
All in all, it's quite a terrible thing that I wouldn't recommend to my enemies.

A straight Virginia for the competition? Interesting!
That's the smell of pure Virginia ... sort of like a rotting pumpkin or, as you said, squash.
Get that stuff as dry as you can prior to starting and this be will less of an issue ... also will help keep the tobacco lit for the competition.

The description on TR looks more like a Balkan blend made by McClelland.

Yo papi -
There are 2 Calumets: the first one is a PCCA with Lat. My tin looks like McClelland produced it. The current UPCA Calumet is a VA ribbon, and that's the one for the SlowSmoke thang this May.
