As most of you out there probably know by now, I am an admitted Bent Bulldog Fan. Ok, ok! "Hi, My name is Dino and I am a Bent Bulldogaholic" As is often the case, a few weeks back I caught myself surfin the interweb, namely ebay and etsy lookin for my next acquisition, and I found what was listed as a "Nice Vintage Dunhill Estate" pipe. I could tell from the images that this thing was pretty grunged up. During the Offer, Counter-Offer game I inadvertently accepted the second counter offer. It was admittedly more than I wanted to pay, but in the big picture of things, $20 or $30 on a Dunnie Bent Bulldog wasn't gonna break the bank. It arrived relatively quickly and much to my disappointment it was even grungier than I had feared. The condition of the stem was worse than I had hoped for as well. After what seemed like hours of reaming the bowl I then got to work cleaning up the rim and removing many many years of grunge from the stummel. It was after doing this that I was able to see all of the nomenclature. Finally some good news. What I thought was a 60's or 70's pipe turned out to be a 1952. I finally finished it up this evening. Now, before anyone gets their hopes up I want to give full disclosure. Although I would have liked to have simply buffed it up and have myself a showcase briar, the condition issues were more significant than I would have hoped for. In the end I'm happy with the way it turned out and will undoubtedly enjoy smokin this for many years to come. Here's the befores.... And the afters...

Where they holes in the stems or just huge tooth marks? Any chance for a pic of the nomenclature. Nice pipe.

Lots of filing and sanding and buffing to get it looking like it does. The pics of the nomenclature didn't turn out, I'm using an iPhone 5s, no fancy digital camera here

Thank you all for your kind comments. I'm sittin here in the Mancave, lookin up on the Bent Bulldog Shelves and admiring my newest addition to the stable. It really is a beautiful little briar with really nice birdseye on the bottom of the stummel and shank. Think I'll let it sit up there for a while before I smoke it... KInda hate to mess it up.

Confession time. Late last night, while perusing the various piping forums/sites, I relented and pulled my newly refurbed Dunnie down off the shelf, packed er full of aged Margate and Absolutely, Thoroughly and Unashamedly enjoyed it to the max! Thanks again for all of the swell comments gang. This morning I've already been back up to the mancave, and took a polishing rag to it. I know, I know already, but hey admitting you've got a problem is the first step right?

Welp Pipe Fans, After a very courteous "chat" conversation with Dave last night, we determined that I'm more adept at refurbin these beautiful ol briars than I am at dating em. Turns out that my lil ol Dunnie is missin it's patent number on the nomenclature. Meaning that what I thought was a 1952 is actually a 1962. Sorry bout the egregious error.

That does put you a lot closer to the 1963 Dunhill you were looking for. Glad it's a good smoker and the before and after pic's are impressive!

I think I'll have to settle for a Conception Year Dunnie for now. You did a nice job, on that pipe Dino,...what a job on resurrecting it from the dead! Would you like to winter in Arizona this year? Makes sure you bring all your refurbishment stuff when you come. When you get around to it, I would like to hear how it smokes...maybe on a scale of 1 to 10... Some people are Dunhillolics and really sing their praises, but those that aren't wedded to that brand, seems like in spite of their reputation for quality, oinions vary widely. Having said all that, I want to get a 1960, I think a bulldog would be my choice for a birth year pipe.

I read that as a 1962 then? If so that is my birth year and, well, Christmas is coming up. Would be a nice surprise gift. Great job on the stem marks. I cant even see a faint glimpse of what used to be there.

Nothing would make my parents happier, they live in Show Low. As to the smokin the Dunnie? It smokes great. The first bowl was some 5 to 10 YO Margate. An exquisite blend in a great shape. I am very much enjoyin the Bulldog. Both admiring the lines on it and enjoying the smoking experience.

Two Thanksgivings ago we had thanksgiving with my son in laws folks in Show Low, nice place, but that weekend had howling winds and near freezing temperatures. .. man that was cold for a desert rat!
Glad to hear it is a good smoker, there is a reason that it was heavily smoked...beautiful job on restoring that pipe.
