qmechanics has been resurrecting a lot of threads lately. I'm still wet behind the ears. I know what I like to smoke and what I dont. I also know where the pipe cleaner goes. That's about all.

I'm always trying to learn new things. I don't see the point of being a know it all. I have a pretty good hold of the basics that make smoking enjoyable, as well as a pretty good idea of what blends I like and why I like them. That being said, there are always further levels of knowledge and understanding to gain.
I know almost nothing about pipes themselves, so that's a whole different chasm to plunge into at some point, lol.

I have never been one to label, but never could figure how a hipster fit in them skinny jeans! Spandex. The answer is spandex.
It looks like denim but it is actually a stretchy, flexible material.
I read in a magazine that this is causing trouble for the U.S. mint's paper manufacturer. They had traditionally used denim scraps as their fiber base, but modern factories make so many "skinny jeans" that the scraps are tainted by spandex/lycra, rendering them unsuitable for currency.

I came with a big bunch of folks who originated on Reddit. That is a scary, scary place. There's a very specific Reddit type of new smoker:
- Wants a churchwarden.
- It must be briar, because cobs do not project the right aura to onlookers!
- It needs to be less than twenty dollars because, being a Redditor, the dude is broke.
- Often said twenty dollar churchwarden has already been purchased from Amazon, so it's made from something actively poisonous. Our new smoker definitely does not wish to hear that his pipe might kill him.
Assuming our trilby-wearing beardo makes it past the first instar, the newly pupated smoker has more predictable output:
- Photo post with Lord of the Rings and a pretentious beer
- "Can anyone tell me their ideas about <insert extremely specific cheap Italian pipe> ?"
- Finally, "I have my technique perfected, but all my tobacco tastes the same!"

I started piping slow and began with a 10 dollar store pipe and some sutliff, still haven't moved far from the otcs as I truly enjoy tobacco. In all forms but pipe tobacco especially. Out of a nice pipe makes for a nicer smoke. And the pipe company history's are sort of inspiring. I'm still learning.

*takes sip of a brew that only 100 gallons were made and thats why its better* Now let me tell you what Peter Jackson got wrong about Gandalf.

Back when I started in 1969, we of course did not have the "instant info" that's available via the inter-web today. We bought our 'baccy & pipes at B&Ms or via snail mail and paper catalogs. We learned from "old codgers" and pipe shop owners about pipe smoking. Things didn't move as fast as they do today ie a young "newbie" today can go on the web and in 2 minutes read a 'baccy review, gone to an e-tailer and buy their pipe & a variety of blends, a lighter, some cleaners and a pipe/'baccy pouch and voila! they are a pipe smoker! Things moved much slower when I started which I feel allowed you to really learn things. I think some of today's technology has created some of the "posers" we encounter today though I will say we had them back then. I'm still learning every time I load a pipe and put a match to it !

I always have Carter Hall in the house. Nothing better on a rainy day.

Wow! You know a forum has become successful when it has threads to be, and being, necro bumped! Congratulations! Just compared and we have more members now than the People's Front of Judea, or the Judean People's Front. Only PipesMag has more (17,000+!) because everybody joins there at some point. Not sure how many are active, though. On topic: IMHO you can't really fault 20-somethings for experimenting with their "image", though it is kind of sad when people remain preoccupied with how other perceive them.

Carter Hall is one of my favorites, and spot on about it being a good rainy day tobacco.

I smoked a pipe for years. Stopped for years. Then recently started again. Some pipes smoke differently than others. The bowl diameter, the material used to make the pipe, the cut of the tobacco. The type of tobacco. All these things create different smoking experiences and require different practices in tamping and smoking. That's one of the reasons I love pipe smoking. The feel of different pipes in my hand, the different layers and textures of smoke in different tobaccos. All new, every time. It slows me down. Makes me pause and think, looking around. Taking notice. I don't think I'll ever be an expert in that. But I'd love for a new person to experience that. And I never want to be the reason why a newbie doesn't.

And now for something completely different... Two Irishmen decided to write a musical; unfortunately they couldn't get past the first two bars. For full disclosure my family roots extend into Ireland. I enjoy adult beverages and am developing a friendship with Legend Lover. So all those PC folks who think I am dissing the Irish nothing can be further from the truth...Now the Welsh, well that is a different matter😁.
Carry on ....
PS This moment was brought to you by Bass O'Matic in honor & response to Chico's MP reference above.... Keep up the good work!!! We now return you to your regularly scheduled program...
