One thing most of us share is a love for beautiful and functional pipes. Many of us are aware of the hours upon hours a pipe maker puts into shaping, drilling and sanding a pipe in order to turn it into the perfect specimen to feed our PAD. What we may not be aware of the same amount of time, skill and love that goes into that little block of wood long before it touches the hand our a pipe maker. Briar is a pretty amazing substance when you think about it. It can handle high heat for extended periods of time, and if treated well can last decades. There are thousands of pipes out in the world that are 50, 75, 100 years old and that's not even factoring in the age of that little piece of wood that makes it all happen. Whomever though to dig up a bush on the side of a mountain and use the root burl to make a device to smoke tobacco in was a bit whacky... but thank goodness he did. This is a great video of Mimmo Romeo, one of the premier briar cutters and suppliers. Many of the well known pipe makers in the world will only source their briar from Mimmo. I hope you enjoy watching how a pipe is truly born!

This shows you just what a tough business this is. The reject rate alone would be enough to deter most people. I got a real appreciation for what goes into just providing the nucleus of a pipe.

I have to confess that I didn´t realize that there is a complete business at work before the pipe maker receives his briar. Of course someone will have to prepare the blocks and this is a lot more work than I would have thought. Amazing!

This was fun to watch and informative. We tend to forget how much the cutter determines the parameters for the carver.
