Looking at the results of the United Pipe Clubs of America competition this year. The overall winner was Alexy Shekhovtsov from the St. Petersburg (Russia) Pipe Club with a time of 1:25:11. The American winner was Raymond Lykins with a time of 1 hr. 21 min. and 19 sec. Scottie Piersel won the women's division with a time of 00:33:59.
How does anyone keep a pipe lit for that amount of time? How long, on the average, does your bowl last?

Anywhere from 5 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the pipe, tobacco, mood, temperature, humidity, baromtric pressure, and the position of the stars. This is like asking "how long does it take to get to work?). Sorry I can't give you a better answer, but it would take a book.

For my medium sized pipes, a smoke lasts 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the cut and moisture content of the tobacco. A bowl of Semois, being dry and fine-cut might only last 15-20 minutes. Large pipes can last an hour or more. My small pipes will only last about 10-20 minutes. On the other hand, I do not try to smoke slow like slow-smoking competitors do.

Wow. Any idea of what tobacco they use? I'm sure that is extremely important.

How does anyone keep a pipe lit for that amount of time? How long, on the average, does your bowl last? Look down that list and you'll find me at place #8. I participate in a lot of pipe smoking contests under both the IAPSC rules and the CIPC/UPCA rules. One of my friends is 4 time IAPSC World Champion and 3 time UOCA US National Champion. Contest times do not reflect everyday smoking times. In a contest you smoke slower than you normally would. You’re more smoldering tobacco than smoking it. You’re using some techniques that you normally wouldn’t at home. At home, a typical group 4 (0.75” x 1.5”) bowl will last me 45 to 60 minutes of continuous smoking depending on the blend that I am smoking. My best official contest result for that size bowl of a cube cut Burley is about 1 hr 18 min.

Normally about six martinis in length, but you never do the two at the same time, so it's just an estimate

Wow. Any idea of what tobacco they use? I'm sure that is extremely important. For the UPCA US National held in Chicago, it is a different tobacco every year. The selected blend is announced about 3 months in advance. 3.0 grams ate used. For IAPSC official events, the same blend has been used for the past 69 years. It is "IAPSC Competition Blend" which is available from Paul's Pipe Shop. It is a cube cut Burley with a very, very slight touch of chocolate and vanilla. People either love or hate this blend. Most hate it. However, I’ve found that it tastes better the slower you smoke it. 3.3 grams are used.

I can nurse a small bowl of Flake for 3hours, and one of my largest bowls of Nightcap 30 minutes or so. I can really puff away on a bowl of English, but if I do the same with Virginia, she can be a harsh mistress and bite me like a viper. Our pipe club just became a member of the UPCA, and they recommended that we have a slow smoke competition, I reckon that we will have to get on board soon.

There is an annual pipe night in the New Orleans area every year sponsored by one of the local B&M. I one long smoke competition for the last two years. My times were 1 hr. 24 minute and 1 hr. 27 minutes. I don't know which "rules" they follow. We use our own pipes and they provide the same amount of tobacco to each participants. You get two matches - one for a pre-light and one for the real light. You are allowed to tamp while smoking.
At home, the length of time depends on where I'm smoking and if there is a wind blowing.
