Tread carefully here. I remember the auction and most of the pipes were very beaten up and went for pretty low prices. A few did well, but just because a pipe has been given a facelift doesn't mean it's fit underneath.
I declined to bid because of the condition of the pipes. Interesting bit of history, but nothing I would pay a lot of money to own.

What is a good price for a pre-transition Barling in similar condition sans celebrity?

What is a good price for a pre-transition Barling in similar condition sans celebrity? Price depends on a variety of factors, size, shape, finish, condition, era, etc. The price being asked for this pipe is not crazy, but it's at the top end for this model. Here's a rough a very, very, very rough idea of price range in USD, based on just size EXEXEL - 200 to 1200 EXEL - 200 to 800 EL - 150 500 L - 100 to 300 S-M - 85 to 200 SS - 70 to 150 Then there are all sorts of other qualifiers such as grade, long shanks, sterling fitments, casing. It's a little bit like asking "How much is a car?"

Way beyond my means at the moment, but if the pics are accurate, it does look like a nice piece! There is a 'Best Offer' option, so what the hell? I may just throw in an offer.

The pipe shows Sidney's name, but there are no logos or other markings to show that it's a Barling.

Look at pics of how the stem fits the shank. Looks off to me.

Sort of beside the point because somebody bought it, but the stampings were included in the description of the pipe and the "Barling's Make" stamp can be faintly seen. The stampings are just buffed down. The "MADE IN LONDON" over "ENGLAND" indicates to me that it was made sometime between the late 1930's and early 1940's.
