Sad news for fans of this blend. Smoking Pipes said there's no more 5100 Red Cake. Apparently this years crop of Carolina Red Virginias were not up to McClelland's standards, so when it's sold, it's gone. They don't know when more may be produced.

Wow. Thanks for the heads up Jim. Good thing I have 10 lbs jarred in the cellar. Hat tip to McClelland for turning down an inferior product.

Guess I need to make my 2lbs cellared last. But as mentioned rather have them pull it rather than put out an inferior product.

This is one of them when I always meant to get around purchasing, but never did so. Oh well maybe a year or so, there will be a good crop in stock.

Always meant to try it, but never did. A local pipe shop carries it, so maybe I can get some from there. The question is, do I want to try it and potentially like it, only to not be able to get it until who knows when? I think some people call that a "first world problem".

Could this be why C&D Red VA Cavendish is out of stock as well?

Thanks for the update on this Jim. It appears that the usual online stores are out of stock (smoking pipes, 4Noggins, pipes and cigars), but I did locate in-stock at Mars Cigars: www.marscigars.com/mcclellandbulk-5100redcake.aspxAt least at the time of my posting that is! In fact, I purchased a pound earlier today too

My best guess is this one will eventually be back on shelves once the problems are worked out. In the meantime, I expect some ripple effects. I’m guessing #2015 and McCranie’s Red Ribbon/Flake will go down fast once the panic takes hold. McCranie’s still lists these from the 2011 cut as available on their site.

The good news is McClelland is not lowering the standard. Luckily I have two lbs in the cellar.

2 ounces open and 8 ounces in the cellar. Hopefully that covers it until it is back. Thx for the heads up egg head.

I emailed Jeremy from C&D to ask if their shortage of Red VA Cavendish was related to this. He said that C&D has never had any issues finding high quality Red VA and their current shortage is just a time and resource thing. I'm guessing that McClelland just has different standards.

Well, I succumbed to the panic and bought two pounds from the local B&M. They had it $12 per pound cheaper than Mars Cigar. Now that's a switch; usually B&M prices are higher than online prices because of the overhead and additional taxes.

I looked in the cellar, only saw two pounds. Smoking pipes had free shipping for over $49 so I got another pound in the mail today. Completely irrational but I feel a little better this evening.

If memory serves, I recall reading on tobaccoreviews.com that the leaf in McCranie's Owner's Choice is actually McClleland 5100 to which McCranie's applies "special techniques at the blending bar..."
