How many of you avoided latakia blends because you didn't like latakia, and later found that you did like it, and now smoke lat-blends?

I am the opposite. Coming off of cigars, I smoked latakia blends at first because they provided the biggest punch of flavor. When I eventually started exploring non-lat blends, I slowly began to appreciate their subtle nature. Now I tend to stick with VAs and burleys. Early Morning Pipe is about as much latakia as I want in a blend these days.

When I started out it was with aromatics. I went to a small pie shop and the owner turned me on to Dunhill MM 865. That was in 1971 and I've been a lat smoker since.

As Quaffer has mentioned above, I had been smoking cigars a number of years back, and when I jumped into pipes, I believe my first two tins were GLP Robusto and Charring Cross, followed by some Frog Morton. I eventually got into and thoroughly enjoyed Va/Pers, but now I simply enjoy quite a number of different blend types. Hey, I just got in the mail earlier this week a pound of MacB' HH Vintage Syrian, and am expecting a pound of McC' 5100 on Friday. Two different ends of the spectrum...

I started with English blends, then Summer in Vegas came and I found them a bit heavy. I went to Va’s and VaPers. Now that cooler weather is here I smoke a Lat blend daily.

Loved it since the first time I tried it. I smoke way less of the black stuff now, not because I am tired of it, but simply in the name of trying new blends.

When I got back into pipes this time around it was with the intention of trying Syrian Latakia. I was hesitant with regards to Cyprian Latakia but with the exception of foul lat-bombs like Russ' Yule Log (the Dark Fired Kentucky doesn't endear it to my palate either) I've pretty much come around on latakia blends.

Started off with Latweeds and smoked them for a long time before migrating to Ginnyweeds, VaPers and Burleys. Still love a good and heavy Latakia blend during the cooler months.

I started out, like many, with aromatic OTC blends and started enjoying English blends when a Tinder Box opened near where I grew up. Now I enjoy all good tobacco blends.

Looking at my cellar via a tracking site, 43% of the 102 lbs cellared has Latakia in some capacity in the blends. I guess I’m in the camp that enjoys it.

Smoking Rajah now, which has a nice amount of lat. Sometime in the Seventies I lit a bowl of blending lat. I took a draw and blew fog for about twenty seconds. Smooth, but thick. I have been avoiding lat blends while trying to get my tongue used to smoking again. Rajah's is smoother than many aros I am smoking, so I may have to come down with TAD again. I think I have been bitten by the lat bug

Didnt like Latakia for years and years. I am currently in the middle of trying to include it in my rotation. So far I have enjoyed Penzance (and have for awhile) 3 Oaks Syrian and Balkan Sasieni. If anyone knows why those 3 let me know and I will focus on this when trying others, lol.

Jim, does it count if one switched to lat during antediluvian times? First tobac I smoked was Sail, then I discovered Balkan Sobranie and haven't smoked but a few bowls of non-lat since. This was in the late 1960's, 'course, I'm not that old, I started smoking at birth.

At the inaugural Arizona pipe club meeting, we all brought Latakia blends and Darin phoned in a lat bomb to our meeting.... 75% Latakia! I couldn't smoke any Latakia for a month after that...but I did come back to it. You cannot beat the Latakia's for a cool smoke, and in my WO Larsen large brandy, the bowl of tobacco is magical.

First experience was WTF? I don't even remember what the stuff was or if it was actually legal. I do know it grew on me quickly afterwards. Nothing like Lat in the evenings.

When I first tried Latakia I thought it tasted like dirty gym socks. I eventually came around and smoked Lat blends almost exclusively. My interest faded and my tastes changed and now I find that I just don't enjoy Latakia anymore. Once in awhile, it's "so-so", but in general I avoid it.

Which is why you should only chew on clean gym socks.... that Clorox topping takes care of any bacteria.

Curious how different tastes are. If lat blends weren't available, I'd prolly quit smoking.

in the same manner that a Martini drinker regards Vermouth . . . . . . just a hint. To that regard, my current rotation with a light Latakia enhancement are EGR and Vauen: Zeppelin. I have a tin of Mac Baren: Plumcake on the shelf and earlier this year, I smoked 4 ounces of Lane: HGL over the course of several months.

so, I started out just a little over a year ago I was dead set against latakia. I was convinced it was too strong and hubby didn't like the smell at all. However, hanging around pipe smokers constantly pushing latakia blends at me I gave in and started trying mild blends and found that the flavor was often much more mellow than the smell indicated. I don't avoid them any more, though I don't see hubby letting me try Boswell's Northwoods any time soon, lol. I have discovered I like the English aromatics quite well, such as C&D Cross-Eyed Cricket and Captain Bob's Blend.

First 2 years mostly aros, sometimes a Virginia I would add aros to. All from local pipe store. Asked the pipe store for something different/stronger one day. It was a mix bag named English special. I think I smoked half a bowl and threw it away. I dont remember when it changed but here 12 years later cellar is 75% latakia.

Got a good deal on 6 tins, so glad I like it. The Lat is there, but subtle. Fits right in with the blends I listed above. A solid smoke from the start to a good finish. The smell of Latakia was more prominent than the taste in the blending. It does leave an aftertaste for about a 1/2 hour, so may reserve it for last smoke of the night.
