My brother-in-law just mailed me a Christmas present Dunhill. It came in an old Dunhill Bruyere cardboard box, and had the old User's Guide with it. My bro didn't know what it was, but it's actually a 1964 Root Briar bent billiard. That's a birth year Dunhill for me. smokingpipes has a '69 in the exact same shape and style as mine. Here's a pic of the one they're selling. Mine's identical, it was just a better pic than I could take. SP is asking $575 for theirs. Not a bad freaking Christmas present, and it smokes perfectly. Group 4, like the one in the pic. Wow.

Congrats. That's one tick off the bucket list. That's classic shape and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do my birth year pipe.

Nice pipe. Curiously, for me, a birth year pipe would be made out of a fired mortar shell. I was born in the last year of world war 2. Not much briar work then, I assume.

Totally by chance. He doesn't know what a birth year pipe even is, or how to look up shape markings. He thought the pipe was a Bruyere because it came in a Bruyere box, which means he didn't even read the Dunhill Root Briar engraved on the side. It has Made In England4 on one side, which I believe means 1960+4, then 4 in a circle (Group 4), and an R, which I think means Root Briar. The other side says 6120 Dunhill Root Briar, which would of course be the shape and finish. I just noticed one difference from the smokingpipes pic; mine has a saddle bit, which I prefer anyway. Big meaty pipe, in a proper British shape Dang it, I'm going to have to take some pics when it's daytime.

A lot of folks go to a lot of trouble to find a birth year Dunhill that's not too expensive. Mine came as a complete surprise used Dunhill Bruyere that was actually a '64 Root Briar worth $575. Sorry everyone

I was gifted with a birth year Dunhill by a friend of another forum. All I have ever got from my BIL is a plea to add money to his prison commissary account. Keep him around.

Ok, here's the pics of my actual 1964 Group 4 Root Briar with the saddle bit. Right side is prettier than the left, I think.

My bro is a sculptor (he's in museums), and is excellent at finding deals. He makes most of his money making WWII reproduction German PPK grips, which is a weird thing to make your living by. There are apparently a bunch of folks who own a PPK and want repro WWII grips. He has to put on his website I'm not a Nazi! Well, I just found out from the female parental he paid a 'ton' for the Dunhill. I'm trying to get her to find out how much, but am sure he didn't get a $575 Dunhill for $20. It's pretty awesome, especially when he just thought it was a Dunhill, and didn't know what a birth year even was. He got me a Cumberland Canadian for Christmas last year, that has just started to smoke properly, it smoked really wet before it got a cake. The Root Briar however, smokes perfectly from the first bowl. Big meaty pipe, pretty sure you could club someone to death with it, but it balances nicely in the teeth. Has a bit of chatter, which I don't mind in a 53 year old pipe, but still a 4.7 or 4.8 out of 5, like the $575 one on smokingpipes. I now have 26 pipes, 5 of which are baskets, and 7 of which are cobs (which all smoke perfectly, too), and two dadgum Dunhills. Not too shabby PS His brother is the one constantly in and out of prison; he's not. One of these days he's not going to come back out. Hopefully.
