I was smoking a bowl in a MM with amber stem and noticed all the moisture buildup. I did not have a filter in it, thus my first question:
DRG and Medico just look like mini TP tubes. Does anyone actually use them? Savinelli 6 mm? Anyone? how often do you switch out a filter? Each time? Which kind do you use? Limited on 6 mm varieties. Oh, I have bought some Brighams, but they fit very few pipes.
9 mm. any preferable brand? is balsa better? There are Meerschaum filters as well to consider.
My biggest issue on pipe cleaners is they are mostly too thick for narrower stems. Some won't fit at all. I can go through the other side, but they still jam at the bend.

I started out using the Dr. Grabow filters with my MM pipes. They'd sometimes get too moist & hard to get out of them stem. Then I decided to try the Sav balsa filters & liked them better. The draw doesn't get constricted like the tube style filters. You can use either type several times by letting them dry out in between smokes. I leave mine laying in the bowl until the next smoke.
The only 9mm filters I've used are the activated charcoal type & they are usually good for a couple smokes.
As for pipe cleaners, I mainly use BJ Long. I have an assortment of regular, tapered, fluffy & bristle cleaners. When I use them on a bent pipe, I put a slight bend on the leading edge to help it go around the bend.

I picked up an entire shoe box jam packed with old cleaners of varying types some time ago and have been working on them since; however, I've also become a fan of Decatur cleaners which can be had through Pipes and Cigars. I've picked up a few when I was just a little short on free shipping. They're tapered and work as well as any on my pipes.
I use the Dr. Grabow and Medico filters in cobs. Sometimes I have to cut about an 1/8th of an inch off the Grabows but I prefer them to the Medico as they have a greater density. I normally get a couple smokes per filter.
I use the Savinelli 6mm balsa filters in their dry system pipes and really like them. I pitch these after each smoke.
A 9mm balsa filter is all I use in those pipes as I never found a charcoal filter which wasn't too restrictive. I'll normally dry and flip these to get two good smokes.
Just my $.02. I'm sure others do things differently with equal success.

Filters, toss them.
Pipe Cleaners, use more. (Dill's work well for narrow passages)
On Cob stems, I generally double over the pipe cleaner on one end.

I use Medico and Dr Grabow filters, they keep the gunk out of my mouth and take the rough edges off some of the blends I smoke,as far as pipe cleaners I use B J Long's and Dill.

Thanks for the info. I made a few purchases based on these answers. My first DRG (Royalton) came today. It had a filter in it. Compared to the Medico it is much better.
I will get some Dill's next time I buy from Pipe Nook or P&C. I am hoping the tapered ones coming help. I did something I am not sure will pan out. I bought some of different colors for two reasons. They measured less than 4 mm and were a thousand for 13$. I did buy some Vauen filters to compare to Sav.
As to tossing filters. Seems to work on some pipes. Others the plastic replacement tube works. On some, you just need a filter. That may be more tobacco than pipe. I will find out

With DRG, I cut them in 1/3 and change out with each smoke. I am more concerned with the draw as opposed to filtering the smoke. Have always thought the knock on filters in DRG & Cob was from using a filter for too long. With Sav, I cut 6 & 9 MM in half (cause their spendy). I get 3 uses from each balsa cut and after a smoke, I dry it in the microwave for 45 seconds. If you trim just a sliver from each end of a balsa filter, you'll see it is still clean inside. If they acquire haze or tobac stains, I scrape them lightly with a knife, prior to nuking them.

Regarding 9mm filters david. I have used balsa, charcoal, meerschaum, and paper filters. I switch out a filter after every smoke. They are cheep enough to replace, IMO. My favorite are the meerschaum filters for most of my smokes. They can be found here: www.ebay.com/itm/210-PCS-WHITE-ELEPHANT-NATUR-MEERSCHAUM-9MM-FILTERS-NEW-MADE-IN-GERMANY/311453358294?epid=1248574195&hash=item48841118d6:g:q0UAAOSwuTxWByh0For carbon filters, my favorite ones are either Vauen or Stanwells, but have not tired all brands. For balsa, I feel they are OK, but not as good as meerchaum. For paper filters (as far as I know) there are only Vauen 9mm filters. They are the most like not using a filter (even more so than using a balsa filter), but you will get tongue bite if the tobacco is capable of delivering. On the advantage side, you will get the truest tobacco flavor (depending on the tobacco) using paper filters. They can be found here: www.ebay.com/itm/VAUEN-dr-Perl-9mm-PAPER-Filters-for-tobacco-Pipe-80-filters/262939491525?epid=793742665&hash=item3d386a3cc5:g:zeYAAOSwzqFY82LoI pretty much only use a 9mm filter in my briars/meerschaum pipes. I would recommend trying all types of filters and pipe/tobacco combinations and decide for yourself. I have found some pipes/tobacco/filter combinations work better than others. Edit: I have zero affiliation with any of the sellers on the links above, but have purchased from them and have been satisfied with them.

Thanks. I've never tried meer filters. I scored a tube, see how long it takes to get across the pond.

Amazon has these as well. 40 box 12.95, free ship if over 25$. 3 boxes at 20$, but ship is another 5 or so. The eBay price is a tad better. I just try to keep my orders in the USA for less difficulty

May not be worth a bent nickel but I'd trust the Euros over Americans on anything 9mm. Just a hunch play. See how it goes? All part of the fun.
