I think I have found a rabbit hole and have at this point just stuck my head in it. I have been looking at them for a while and decided to pull the trigger on an entry level pen. I have ordered 2. Both are the Pilot Metropolitan, one in black with medium NIB and a silver with a fine NIB. They have received good to excellent reviews for the price point it appears. My penmanship is horrible but something I have wanted to improve. I received a very small (not re-fillable) leather passport sized journal for a Christmas present. The primary reason I wanted a journal was to track and make notes on pipe/baccy combinations. Not that I am overthinking anything, but thought it would be beneficial to take some notes. With over 50 pipes and 107 baccys (many just one or two tins and no longer available, other baccy with many pounds) I have found several that to me pair up nicely. But with so many combinations I am getting confused. I do jot down notes but it’s haphazard. So as I await the pens, should arrive by Saturday, I am researching now refillable journals. Inks, papers, the whole fountain pen deal appears to be like pipes! I may get them, hate them or get hooked. If the former, not out a lot of money. If the later well I guess I jump in the rabbit hole feet first.

Greetings Dan. Check out the Stuff and Things Youtube channel. (He has 2 channels, the other is Stuuff and Things Plays, all vudeo games) If you go to his categories, he has quite a few videos on fountain pens and journals, most of which are refillable. I actually purchased the November Leather journal on his recommendation and Ireally like it. My wife liked it so much, she got one for herself. He is also a pipe smoker and does tobacco reviews, all long with other topics. Hope this might help your journey.

...I have always written with a fountain pen...starting off with good lower price pens is smart...like pipes, you can spend a fortune...Fountain pens take practice...when I wanted to improve my cursive letters back 30 years ago, I bought a 3rd grade writing tablet and practiced every day...still do from time-to-time...Enjoy the experience!

Same here, the last time that I attempted to write a letter it was downright embarrassing, I am going to take the peterd advice with the tablets.
Muscle memory...if you don't use it, you certainly lose it.

Growing up in English schools, we were ONLY allowed to use 'proper pens'. Ballpoints were seen as plebeian, and not appropriate for written communication. You get the hang of it, though you will lose a couple of shirts. Today, we see kids punished for writing in cursive. Left-handed folks probably do not mourn the passing of the fountain pen as much.

I have a Mont Blanc Meisterstruck No. 149 fountain pen, a gift from my wife, but truth be told I prefer writing with a dip-pen. My favorite combination of the latter is an antique green wooden pen staff marked "CITIZENS STATE BANK CRESTON, NEBR" fitted with a R. Esterbrook & Co. No. 313 Probate nib. Currently I use Higgins Eternal Ink in black.
As an aid to penmanship, may I suggest the book titled Write Now: The Complete Program for Better Handwriting by Barbara Getty and Igna Dubay. This was recommended to me by ravkesef, a pipesmagazine.com Forums member and fountain pen aficionado.

Fountain pens do require more patience but worth the effort. I've been using this Namiki for many years. I like the fact that is has a retractable nib and uses Pilot refills.

I own several fountain pens and related accessories (inks, writing pads, etc.). It's a fine and useful hobby and, as someone already observed, it can get pricey if not held in check.

I know the civil war trilogy is over 1 million words, no wonder it took him what 26 years to write all 3 volumes!

Incidentally, the Esterbrook No. 313 Probate nib was his personal favorite. As for The Civil War - A Narrative, he began that work in 1954 and completed it in 1974, so it took only 20-years!

Shelby Foote's one of those people who makes you quiet and listen when he speaks. He's a perfect example of a pipe smoker and pen user

Shelby Foote's one of those people who makes you quiet and listen when he speaks. He's a perfect example of a pipe smoker and pen user Mr. Foote's voice is entrancing, isn't it?. Allow me to recommend the viewing of ( and listening to) any of his C-SPAN interviews conducted by Brian Lamb. Toward the end of the three-hour In Depth program Mr. Foote talks briefly about his pipe-smoking, and viewers are given a glimpse of some of his pipes in a rack.

It's the way he has thought, and is thinking, about what he's saying. Thanks for the Lamb recommendation.

First batch of supplies have arrived. Both pens are Pilots. Black Medium NIB and Silver is a fine NIB. Notebook and journal and an elementary school lined workbook to work on my terrible penmanship. Will try to take better photos of the pens later.

I use a Montblanc fountain pen in my journal and for entries in the bound ledger for our irrigation district. As Treasurer I still use a bound ledger since I might be replaced by someone without a computer.
As with many of my generation, I learned to write with fountain pens and never lost interest in them.

At my last school in England in 1975, we of course had to use 'real' pens. Our desks were so old they still had the inkwell carved into them, though we used refillable cartridges.
The only advice I would give to someone learning how to use a fountain pen is to wear old shirts while you're learning!

Forget the commercial pens. Go talk to Basil Meadows. I’ve bought several pens and pencils, including 2 fountain pens from him as gifts for my wife. She especially like the commissioned pen and pencil set which Basil made for her out of wood from one of our lilac bushes. She does the pump fill on the fountain pens and doesn’t use the pre-filled cartridges. As a bonus, I get to try and use the excuse that she has more of Basil's pens and pencils than I have of Basil's pipes.

As long as your taking on another acquisition disorder, you should visit the Ebay seller: judperl. He has as many pipes as pens. Also a website: www.juddspensandpipes.com

I use a fountain pen everyday at work. I haven't ventured into refilling from a bottle yet and still use the inserts. I get a lot of interesting comments and looks. Once you get hooked the pens will pile up fast!

I would never buy one of those pens. Especially the ones that refill from a bottle. Haven't you ever watched The Three Stooges or Loony Toons?!
