I received an order of tobacco a couple days ago.Enough to last me about half the new year..I'm thinking that there must be something psychological about having a good supply of tobacco because the more I have on hand the more I tend to smoke..Just A random thought to start a new year.

Yes and no,I can get overwhelmed and shy away from the quantities.Don't want to open a jar and ruin the aging. Can't decide which blend I want.It usually comes down to what is on my desk and what pipe is closest. But my smoking will remain constant according to how much I have to get done.

... After reading these first postings, I was thinking that some psychological think tank would probably love to gather a bunch of us together in a room and ask us about 60,000 questions or so. I'm sure they would have some wild papers to publish in their journals for their peers to read Happy New Year Pipers!

Sometimes I will be smoking blend A and think no way I can find anything as good as this. Then I have to buy 100 more to test that theory apparently.

With me it's not about finding a greater blend, just different. Carter Hall is not better or worse than Chatham Manor to me. Just a subtle difference that makes me grab for one or the other, depending.
I am only good for four bowls a day at the most, so how much I have makes no difference. My limits on bowls/day affects my buying, not the reverse. If I smoke more it takes its toll on my taste buds and mouth. That may be due to all the meds I am on.

Not on any meds though. Dave, I think it's more to do with ph levels of one's mouth/body. (not that your meds might not effect that). As a result, I usually smoke my more subtle blends first, Penzance, Margate, Frog Morton, Quiet nights, etc... And the bolder ones later. Otherwise I cook the buds and the roof of my mouth.

I smoke the same regardless. I should mention that my TAD is very disproportionate to my consumption, so my hoard is always just getting bigger.
I do however experience the phenomena you just described after grocery shopping and being aware of the junk food cabinet being fully stocked... Haha

My brother said that when he bought a carton of cigarettes, he tended to smoke more, just having a pack led him to smoke more conservatively.
As a pipe smoker, I am really pushing it to smoke four bowls per day, generally I smoke 2... but if pipe smoking didn’t bother the wife’s resporatory system, I would probably smoke more.

I seem to do better starting off with something like Five Brothers, which is not exactly mild, but it's a straight flavor. Weather changes and an immune system that is shot has made this a rougher year. My MD says all his RA patients have been going nuts. Anyway, it doesn't take much for me to lose flavor these days. But, your point is taken. I think I will get some PH strips and keep tabs on that. Thanks. Your status in "The Club" is extended

Yeah... we had a discussion about that awhile back, I suspect body chemistry plays a role..... I love Virginia blends, but I have to use extreme care when smoking.

I took Dino's advice. I looked up all the things I could eat and drink on a PH table. Everything I consume is acid. Have some Zellie's gum to combat that and some nitrazine paper to check ph. I'm at that point in life where my tobacco is as important as food, so if I have to do something healthy, it will be to eat veggies more. damn

Also, I smoked straight perique once (to become familiar for blending purposes)and it was like a colony of ants were assaulting my mouth. haha I love it as a condiment though.

I like Perique, but it plays hell with my sinus issues, so I go light with it.

bonanzadriver was right. I got some pH paper. Over the course of a day my pH went from nicely alkaline to not as nicely acid. The latter did take its toll on enjoying tobacco. Things to help Alkaline: Don't eat or drink anything you like. Do use Stevia (sugar replacement), Hazelnuts, Almonds (other nuts taboo), Carrots, Celery, Herbal or Green Tea. Figs. Carob. All meats, fish, coffee and you are screwed. Cheese, Milk, etc... NoNo I intend on adding these things to my diet, but not giving up what I love

Not sure who he is, but if schrödinger were to offer it to me he would have to open the box to prove to me it's there.
