My Grandfather gave me good advice, his saying stuck with me all my life with the reality of living in the real world. His words in French, YOU CAN MAKE ME EAT shite, JUST DONT TELL ME ITS BUTTER. The Old Cajun

I know it's not a religious forum and I am not wanting to start a discussion, but I do want to share what my grandpa said to me when I was going in the wrong direction:
He said that Jesus would not be proud of me for things I did or said and that The Lord walked by him and would walk by me if I would let Him. At Gramp's funeral the organist winced when he was told to play (a non funeral song) What a Friend We Have in Jesus. Was his favorite song.
I didn't listen to Grandpa for decades, but I never forgot it

My Dad, also a pipe smoker, used to stress the importance of living in the moment. One time I mentioned to him that I couldn't wait to be retired. He said "Don't go wishing your life away."

An adage my Mother taught me, has proved sound. If you can't say anything good about . . . . . . don't say anything at all.

Live life for the "dash"! On your headstone will be the date you were born a "dash" and the date you died... No one really cares about those two dates.. THE DASH is what people remember you for..What you did and how you lived your life ... that is what makes the person..not the beginning date of life or ending date of life.. it is LIFE itself that you will be remembered for..

In a meeting I once told a group of bosses that I realized that their job was to tell me lies, but please don't insult me by thinking that I was silly enough to believe them.

My dad was a pretty hard man, one of his favorite sayings was "sympathy lies between shite and sweat in the dictionary", I once Googled it up and it seems the more common phrase is "sympathy lies between shite and Syphillis in the dictionary".
My grandmother actually had a lot more meaningful sayings, Like 'a leopard cannot change his spots", a fly in the ointment, etc...later on i found out that they were from scripture.

My parents were never that insightful. That is not to say they did not provide me with insight as I observed them in life.

I once went to a Character building school at a Dude ranch in Texas, brought my crew, we had evolutions and not to brag my crew won em all.Got back and about a month later the head of Exxon Asia comes to the plant, knew what he was there for, tried to hide, they came and got me on the unit. Big conference room, all the plants high mucky mucks and one ugly Cajun. Mr Asia asks me about the character building school. I say well sir, it's in my opinion a waste of money, you see character by the time you are 6 or 7 is there or not. You hire the top 1% of engineers, At that age the character is or isn't there. He says we want to talk about filters. Filters I say, are you saying you're not getting the truth? He looked stunned, probably because no one told him how the cow eats the corn. I say the sad fact sir, our orgionazion punishes people who say the truth. I did not make a hit there and for 3 years, no raises. Wife had a beauty shop that picked up the slack. Grandpa once told me a thief is the worst human being, but is better than a liar, a thief you know will steal, but a liar?

You guys had some real deep insights from your families. All my Dad said was, "Are you going to be in the G** Damn bathroom all day?". We only had one bathroom so more than 3 minutes elicited similar comments.

My Dad liked to quote a saying by Mark Twain: “Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to open ones mouth and remove all doubt”.

My dad never said much that wasn't through the haze of alcohol, so I have made a conscious effort to remember none of it. My family has never been much for prophetic advice about how to live life either.
One quote that has always stood out to me though is from Hunter S. Thompson...
“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!”

My dad died when I was 9. He worked all the time and I don't remember him saying much about anything. He did give me a great example of how to treat my wife. My high school coaches and Scout leaders set me straight, but there's not one thing that I can single out.

My dad (a pipe smoker) had a sign on the wall of his small woodshop centered over the bench. I don't remember where he got it but know he bought it somewhere and it fit him perfectly. It now hangs over my bench.
"Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me. I want people to know why I look this way. I've traveled a long way, and some of the roads were not paved."
One of the things he told me that really stuck, "Wish in one hand and crap in the other. See which one fills up the fastest."
