I've tried it several times ... Cola flavor was pretty interesting.

What are they smoking out of the damn things Charlie? Tobacco. My knowledge is pretty limited, I believe that typically it is aromatic in nature.... a different product than what we smoke, but it is tobacco. My son saw Afghan villagers smoking it, he said that after the bowl was filled a piece of foil was put on top and a coal on top of that to provide ignition. I don’t know if how that is how it is commonly fired in other regions though. In Vegas was there is at least one popular Hookah lounge, where friends can give it a try, the tubes have disposable mouthieces, and I am told that it is a great place to take a test drive. I smoked waterpioes back in the day, but that is a different matter.😉

The longer term exposure due to the social way it is smoked increases the hazards. Sort of like sitting in a cigar bar for a few hours instead of smoking outside, I suppose.

I smoked it quite a few times traveling in the Middle East, and even bought one along with some tobacco to take home with me. Pretty everyone either has their own mouthpiece, or the shisha bar provides a new one. I enjoyed it, but.... the health issues are real. The article linked above has legit information, though it leaves out something I read in a British study: the tobacco is so permeated with sugars and flavorings that it forms a crystalline substance on your lungs, like in coal-burning chimneys. Imagine deeply inhaling an Ennerdale/Molto Dolce mix, as if you're doing a bong load. Not a good idea. Regular pipe smoking is the least unhealthy, and most enjoyable way to use tobacco.

Thanks for checking in on this....I assumed that the Hookah smoker didn’t inhale the smoke. I held off on an opinion either way, because I just don’t have the facts. I wonder that If governments weren’t so predisposed to hate tobacco’s, maybe they could educate people on safer alternatives, like smoking unadulterated tobacco in Hookah’s.

Good point, but the deep inhalation isn't going to be good no matter how pure the tobacco is. I guess you could just puff like a pipe, but the whole enjoyment comes from that sweet, smooth, water-cooled smoke filling your lungs with a rosy, calming sense of well-being... It's one of those things that is so pleasant but so unhealthy, it's best not to go down that path!

Oregon has banned all smoking products and tobacco to those under 21. Includes E-Cigs too, so I assume Shisha is included as well.

To clarify, I'm not advocating banning or anything like that, but there is definitely a "cool" factor to shisha smoking, and I think people (especially young people) should be made aware of the risks before smoking it. I'd say the same about prescription drugs, diet sodas, GMO food etc. I'm all for people making their own decisions, but they should be informed decisions.

Sounds like it could be more addictive than cigarettes. No thanks.

Most of the Shisha that can be had here is PG with flavoring. It is not good to inhale it, but the ones I knew that smoked it (and as I tried it) do not inhale it. It's simply puff for pleasure. I had a three foot hookah that the wife sent to heaven by picking it up by the pipe, not the base. It was brand spanking new. I promised not to buy another one as I was already getting back into pipes.

There was an excellent middle eastern restaurant here in my Dallas suburb that had hookahs you could smoke after dinner. They were the best restaurant in town, but never made any money and closed after about a year. By the time I found out about them, they'd already ended the hookah offering, so I didn't get to try one.
I went to high school with a guy that had an electric hookah, that would pump the smoke out. He didn't smoke tobacco in it. How in the hell lazy do you have to be...??

From the article: Philip Morris thinks that throwing meat to crocodiles will somehow appease them....

"The Foundation for a Smoke-Free World which is funded by Philip Morris International." What a world.
