That's huge Jim, almost unbelievable. I have ten pounds bulk cellared in varying ages. It's such a staple for so many I wonder if there are any other contributing factors beyond a bad crop?

Where is this information coming from? My understanding was simply that they had not found satisfactory crop of Red VA for the current production, but that was only causing some delay.

Not having been a "McC 5100" connoisseur, where has McClelland been securing their red Virginia from over the last decade or so for the production of 5100? Has it always been in the same geographical area and from the same group of farms? Has there been a decrease in tobacco farms and production due to finances, quality help, soil conditions, weather, governmental farming regulations?
If this particular strain of red Virginia is the same as used in the manufacturing of McCranie's Red Ribbon/Flake, will we possibly see this blend cease production as well? Thought I'd throw that one out there...

Having been in countless smoke filled hotel rooms with Mike over the years I take it he buys on a secondary market from a few tobacco brokers who he has developed relationships with over the last decades. If I remember correctly basically says the same thing I've heard in person on The PipesMagazine.com Radio Show. I've heard a couple rumors in the last few weeks and I would stock up on any of their blends you like.  P.S. I live in an a area that grew tobacco and it's gone other than the Amish who grow a few acres here and there. It's labor intensive and doesn't pay enough to grow without a handout. |

Well, I will be buying all they have at my local cigar/pipe shop as soon as I get the chance. Thanks for letting us know Jim.
Also, I am glad I already have so much cellar-ed tobacco that I will most likely never be able to smoke it all. Damn it all! I hate bad news.

I was hoping perhaps they were tossing #5100 to save as many of their others as possible but it doesn't sound like it. There could definitely be some significant ripple effects as many of their blends contain Red Va. My TAD over the years doesn't sound as illogical this morning. |

Well asparagus piss smell - this was the key ingredient in my "make a crappy aromatic blend better". Oh well, I have 8oz still in the cellar. Guess I will savor the rest.

It's a reality that nothing is forever. How many blends have we enjoyed over the years, only to see them suddenly discontinued and gone for good. This has alway6s been a reality. If there's something you like, buy some to put away. At best you'll have some favored tobacco aging in the cellar. At worst you'll still have some to enjoy once it's gone out of production.

If there's something you like, buy some to put away. At best you'll have some favored tobacco aging in the cellar. At worst you'll still have some to enjoy once it's gone out of production. There appears to be many different unknown forces at work pushing from different sides in this scenario; consequently, I would reverse that categorization. |

Cornell & Diehl Opening Night isn't straight red Va but it's still pretty nice weed, good straight Va. I also smoke a lot of Mac Baren Va #1. Nothing like #5100 but I like it just fine too. It will definitely teach one how to smoke. |

I was initially told it wasn't an exclusive limited release and more would be around later; however, my assumption is all bets are off now. #2015 has many of same qualities of #5100 if you can handle some perique. |

Wow. New member here, gents. But far from new to pipe smoking, and 5100 red cake. Been smoking a pipe for nearly 20 years, and been smoking 5100 red cake for probably 8 or 9 years daily. This is horrible news. Heartbreaking.
I see a few folks comparing a McCranies blend to McClelland 5100. How close is it? I can't look back now, but I believe I saw someone mention McCranies red flake. I'll have to grab some. I'm down to my last few oz of 5100 in my cellar, so these are dark times, indeed. Happy New Year, everybody!
