Get yourself a tin of McClelland's 40th Anniversary while it's still available. It's a great red Virginia. I think of it as Christmas Cheer 2018. Tough find at present. I was initially told it wasn't an exclusive limited release and more would be around later; however, my assumption is all bets are off now. At this time, McC' 40th Anni appears to be available here: www.smokingpipes.com/tobacco/by-maker/mcclelland/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=237516

I have an outside chance of getting somewhere between 1 and 3 pounds of 5100. I won't know for sure until sometime this week. Since I've never had it before, I don't even know if I'll like it. Price will be somewhere between $5.50 and $6.50 per ounce. My question is, if I can get it, should I just get enough for myself to try, or would any of you be interested in buying some? Not looking to make a profit on it, just an offer to share with anyone who may be interested. PM me if interested.

Wow. New member here, gents. But far from new to pipe smoking, and 5100 red cake. Been smoking a pipe for nearly 20 years, and been smoking 5100 red cake for probably 8 or 9 years daily. This is horrible news. Heartbreaking. I see a few folks comparing a McCranies blend to McClelland 5100. How close is it? I can't look back now, but I believe I saw someone mention McCranies red flake. I'll have to grab some. I'm down to my last few oz of 5100 in my cellar, so these are dark times, indeed. Happy New Year, everybody! Welcome aboard. I'd recommend scoring some McCranie's Red Ribbon or Flake. It's good stuff. You won't be disappointed.

McCrainie's Red Ribbon and Red Flake is more flavorful. 40th Anniversary is one of the best reds McClelland's has ever output.

I am going to order some of the McCranies, and go from there. Still, I put some feelers out to find some more 5100. Fingers and toes crossed.

Sitting and shy of 2lbs of 5100. Thanks to the advise of some folks here. I keep seeing mention of McCranie's Red Ribbon/Flake. Which I’ve never had. Is it the same leaf as the 5100 and heading to extinction also?

Well, Mark, I don't really know if it's a nice offer or not, but I appreciate your comment. However, if I can get 6 or 8 ounces for myself, I'll be happy with that. But if I pass on another 8-24 ounces that could have been gone to a fellow BPF member, rather than someone else, then I guess I could call that a 'nice offer'. Although I really can't afford it right now, I may just buy all that's available and hope for the best 1

Is it the same leaf as the 5100 and heading to extinction also? The 5100 is different red Virginias from different years and different crops blended together. The McCranie's ribbon and flake products are one particular crop from one particular year.

Is it the same leaf as the 5100 and heading to extinction also? Good questions Charlie. McCranie's offerings are tinned by McClelland and the fact McCranie doesn't have flake available from the 2011 cut may indicate availability could be a problem in the near future. Red Va has been a staple for a lot of us for years; however, I'm still in the camp this one is such a money maker there's still hope for its eventual return. Good on McClelland for turning down a sub-standard product. Sounds like you did well and have enough on hand to weather the storm.

Red Ribbon/Flake are just specific crop years where as 5100 is a continuous bulk run. No doubt Mike was picking the better lots for the folks at McCranie's every time they called and needed a new batch. Being able to say "this is crop year xxxx and it's in a tin" is big. But as soon as Mike told me that I started buying 5100 and jarring it myself. 5100 was a lot cheaper and now I have enough to last a lifetime. I will miss knowing it is readily available and will always wish I would have bought another 10 pounds.

Yo Sco
When I heard about the 5100 demise, I thought back to your comments at the last Chicago SloSmoke. You may not have meant to explicitly psyche us out, or at least me. (I knew you were gunning for Manduela and Rhie for the whole year). But when I commented on how damp the 5100 was, and you brightly pointed out that it was your daily puff, I thought "uh oh". So when you went on to win the prize for your category, I wasn't all that surprised. I thought that your daily routine was about to be disrupted, and I was thinking of searching for a stash for you. So I'm glad to see that you've already taken care of business.

I even have plans to make a gameday hat out of the tiara that Rie gave me. I'm gonna enter to music and all. It was an international incident last year. This year it's gonna be war! I have been buying a few pounds a year for the past few years. I upped my game this year and just in time. I bought right at 8 pounds over the course of the year...glad I did.

Beau and JD discuss the red scare on the latest podcast, I haven’t listened yet. I just finished listening to the podcast version. Excellent listening as Jon David talks about phone conversations that he has had with Mike and Mary McNeil and provides good factual information. @10furlongs - This is a much better than average episode for CSR. I partly agree with you. Beau is too ADHD (even more so in person the couple of times that he’s visited our Pipe Club). Jon David is a good guy, but sometimes he's way wrong and I’m twitching while listening. I spent a little time smoking with Jon David in Chicago last year. Nice and laid back and pleasant to spend time with. This show is definitely aimed at the younger generation of hipster leaning pipe smoker. For their contributions towards developing the younger generation of pipe smoker which helps to keep our love alive, I applaud them. However, many times, I find myself wanting to dope slap them while I reach for the fast forward button. They need to get outside of their little CSR world and spend more time in the mainstream pipe world.
