I have been wondering if there is a market for hand made Tampers made from wood. If so what be a venue to sell them.
Thank you for your help John

Tough call, John.
I would imagine you could try ebay, but you would probably have better luck selling them on forums and such. Never hurts to start with a small group that you know and are comfortable with.

This weekend at the Arizona Pipe Club meeting I gave away a few in order to get some feed back.

Hey John, thanks again for the tamper. I've used it a few times already instead of my finger ... noticed you were a finger tamper too. It works just fine and the only thing I might say is that I prefer a concave end but that's small beans. Sparks has the right idea with using the forums to sell ... put some pics in the classified section and I bet a few will move. Good Luck!

Darin, thanks for your input. During the next week or so I will post pics of some tampers. I need to finish the ones that are done. Putting a concave the end of the tamper may be a challenge. My lathe is buried behind a bunch of my wife's stuff, I think I have a solution to this problem. As for using my finger to tamp, I learned that from my Granddad and Uncle when I was growing up

As for using my finger to tamp, I learned that from my Granddad and Uncle when I was growing up You bring up an often overlooked subject. I wonder how many of us have picked up pipe smoking tips from our elders. My dad also used his finger to tamp and seldom used a pipe cleaner, or cleaned his pipes for that matter. He'd pull a stem of Timothy grass and force it through when needed. Always whacked his pipe on the heel of his shoe to empty the bowl of dottle when finished smoking and often stuffed the nub of a cigar into his pipe to finish it,,,,clenching the pipe upside down of course.

Ok guys I didn't want to put this out. I saw many men while I was growing up taping there pipes on their hand, heal of their boot, walls and many other items. Liked them I have used nails, bolts, screw drivers, extensions, sticks and whatever they had within reach. And yes a finger would be the most convenient.

Am I the only one who thinks using a finger sounds painful? I pack my pipes with my hand at the recommendation of my tobacconist, but after you light it... Ouch. I keep a Czech tool on me for post-lit tamping.

A few years ago on some of the other forum there was a gentleman sold tampers with spent ammo shells and a pick. His name escapes me but he made a quality tamper and sold many. I know I gifted the Cajun and another friend his tampers for Xma one year. Maybe Brad will remember his name.

This is the reason I was asking about selling Tampers. These are some of the ones I Have made Recently. I make simple tamps I can make with the few tools I have John

I tamp with whatever works, including a finger in the absence of anything else. I also sometimes knuckle-knock the sides of my bowl to settle and redistribute the tobacco.

Nice ones! I always have my Czech in the pocket, put for some or other reason my finger always get most use for tamping. The only negative is that my fingernail is always dirty. The positive is that you always have it available.

I haven't posted any more cause I don't have the post count so I could offer them. Need about 40 more post. Also have a few thing I have to fix around the house so the tamps have taken a back seat for now.

Hit "reply" too early, also hoping to make the next get together. I'm in Florence, AZ. Eli, Arizona pipe club meets monthly, usually in Chandler if you would like to join us, pm me with your phone and email, aand I will put you on the list...our website should be coming along sometime soon (hopefully). If you are incarcerated in the state prison in Florence, my son in law is deputy warden, we might be able to get a furlough approved. J/k
