When I first started smoking coins, like Escudo and luxury Bullseye Flake I mostly folded and stuffed. After a few episodes of the tobacco expanding and setting up like concrete in the bowl, I reverted over to rubbing it all out. While watching a video that followed the Perique tour in the other thread, Per Jensen said (at about 7:15) that folding and stuffing reduces the possibility of tongue bite, rubbing out increases it. He said that folding and stuffing allows it to burn at a lower temperature...which really makes sense...rubbing out tobacco's increases the amount of airflow, and would increase burn rate.
I think that I heard him right, the audio on my laptop sucks!
I think that it is time for e to revisit fold and stuff.
Darin, you need to buy a rope roller like that one they have at MacBaren...a real time saver!

Fold and stuff doesn't really work too well for me. I prefer to dry the tobacco beyond a "foldable" level. Cube cut works well when I want to take the time. Choosing lower sugar content blends and drying well has kept me from ever getting tongue bite.
That roller is definitely awesome! I'm afraid that, for now, I'm stuck at this level:

In my long but sometimes troubled experience as a pipe smoker I've found that the quality of the briar is what affects tobacco that might bite me. The older, better and therefore more absorbent the briar, the less the bite. I try to reserve my best smoking briars for blends that would otherwise bite me; i.e., some virginias. Meers also usually eliminate tonguebite for me. I'm not positing all of these personal insights as a panacea or one size fits all fix. There's always body chemistry and other factors to consider, including fold and stuff versus rubbing out. YMMV.

Took me longer to find this video ... here's what I use for rolling short filler (scrap) cigars but could double for ropes:

I'm with Darin. I like my tobacco too crumbly to fold. Think I'll have to try a coin cube cut and see what happens. Ah hell, who am I kidding, like my palate is sophisticated enough to tell the difference

Thanks Darin, it is nice to see how the sausage is made!
That, I believe is my chief issue.
