From an article by John Stossel on creators.com: Store owner in New York Kamal Saleh was just fined thousands for selling three cigars for $8.89. The bureaucrats said they were 11¢ too cheap. They decided you should pay more for tobacco products after anti-smoking crusader Dr. Kurt Ribisl told the Centers for Disease Control, "Higher prices will deter children from smoking." Ribisl also told the CDC, "Very cheap (tobacco) products should no longer be available." At Ribisl's urging, New York City adopted price floors and taxes to bring the price of a pack of cigarettes to $13 a pack. At the CDC, Ribisl suggested that it should also be government policy to "reduce the number of tobacco stores." "People still have the ability to buy it, if they so choose," he said. "Just not poor people," I (John Stossel) told him. "You're screwing poor people." "We see much higher smoking rates among poor people," answered Ribisl. "We need policies that are going to reduce tobacco use among poor people." That seems cruel to store owners like Kamal Saleh, but Ribisl said, "We're not interested in putting stores out of business ... They're going to find new products to sell." (Thankfully the thought police are looking out for me. Was it Seattle that almost doubled the price of sodas, because they were sugary? We're not interested in putting stores out of business, except we want to put stores out of business. Won't affect the big guys who can afford the lawyers, just the smaller businesses. Hey, swimming pools, fatty foods and cars kill a lot of people too, when are we going to double the price of those to save poor people?)Here's the original article: www.creators.com/read/john-stossel/01/18/punish-poor-people

That's cool. I'd never heard of the site, but was linked there from somewhere. Nice to hear it's run by a pipe writer.

BTW, it was Seattle with the sugary drink tax. Here's Costco's breakdown of the price of a case of Gatorade:

True story. One of dad's Kentucky Whiskey customers also owned a tobacco shop, which competed with another one across the street. They had a price war over a popular cigar and they fought their way down to ten cents and nickel a stogie. The other store came over to dad's friend and asked him how he could sell the cigars at a nickel apiece, "I'm selling them at ten cents and I am losing a dime apiece." Sidney tells the guy that he is sending people over to his store, buying them for a dime and he could sell them for a nickel and only lose a nickel apiece.
Genius hits in weird ways

Part of the tax is supposed to fund programs to educate poor people on proper nutrition. Funny how all these Nannie Laws provide the instigators with employment and job security. P.S. when they did this in New York or Pennsylvania, I believe they also found a way to tax Diet Soda too.

Resume of an A-hole. sph.unc.edu/adv_profile/kurt-m-ribisl-phd/Australian's already pays what...$40.00 for a tin of tobacco...I guess that isn't enough. Bad enough he lives here, he wants to evangelize the world...it is all about controlling others, and I am sure that there is plenty of grant money to eat, drink, and travel on.

I worked with, and was friends with, a guy that had an interesting approach. He joined the Army when he was eighteen, became a helicopter Crew Chief on Hueys, retired when he was 38 after his twenty years, and got the full military benefits and pension.
His room and board were paid for while he was in, so he saved his money, and when he got out, bought a plot of land with cash, free and clear. He then bought some lumber and built himself a one room cabin. He worked part time for his brother installing carpet and, as he saved more money, would buy more lumber and add a room to his house.
First, he added a bathroom, then a separate living room, and so forth. He had a gardening plot on his land where he grew his own, er, tobacco, and just lived in his little house with his cats.
Dude never had to pay rent or a mortgage in his life - I don't think he ever even went in debt. Whether that's your cup of tea or not, you have to kinda admire the guy - my lifeplan when I was eighteen was how I could get Cindy Shaw to go out with me.

We are now living in a Corporatocracy, where profits determine the laws. Controlling the Sheeple plays hand in hand with the plan.

This is a local law, so it only affects New York City.
Between the cost of rent, and snobbery, most cigars in New York City are already over nine bucks, so relatively few cigars or shops are affected.
It just ain't that big a deal.
